A “calligraphic” improvisation score performed by @thomasparentt during a residency showing at LAB7. Part of an exploration of the creative dialogue between human movement and real-time generative AI. “Like the body in motion, generative AI remains unpredictable: it does not prescribe form, but reacts to and interprets the performer’s sensibility, allowing a plurality of states and transformations to emerge. The technology thus acts as a creative partner, amplifying human expression without constraining it, and opening a space of dialogue where forms, images, and movement continuously transform one another.” This @the7fingers exploration brings together the creativity of interactive designer @raphael_dupont_t, dancer-acrobat @thomasparentt, and artistic director @samuel_7doigts, along with the use of an @orbbec camera, generative tools by @tebjan, and @madewithvvvv software. I will do an online talk at the Inscript festival about the process from last summer at the H3H Bienal (info below). ‘During the six-week-long exhibition, I wrote the names of all the deceased sisters of the monastery (since 1271) as a tribute to both the place and the sisters. For this, I developed a custom handwriting that draws on several calligraphic traditions dating back to the monastery’s origins, but maintaining a contemporary feel. The rhythm and variations within this ‘hand’ allowed for a great deal of improvisation, all within the structured framework set out by an extensive research done last year in the studio. The ‘brush dance’ had to be both doable and challenging enough to keep me going during the daylong performances. To keep up ‘tempo’ all details and sense of dept inside the strokes had to be captured by single-stroke method. That still wouldn’t solve the occasional typo-anxienty for a missspelling in a necrologium, wanting to have the utmost respect into the letters, given the occasion and location. Alongside all this, the gradual color shift—achieved by adding a few extra drops of blue ink per name—created a visual sense of a day’s cycle: linking time and space. 💸💸 Our grant program is live! 💸 We love to support and champion explorative, boundary-pushing, and thoughtful work at all stages. Individuals and teams are qualified, with the application process requesting a description of what you’re working on or hope to explore, and where you’ve gotten to in your career thus far. Grants of $500 and $1,000 will be available to a select number of qualifying applications. The judging will be done by this year’s Inscript curators (@mintoming, @samarskaya, and @slobzheninov), and the deadline is by the festival start day, October 16, 2024. ♡ Please tag those you think would be good candidates, and help spread the word!
