I become very overwhelmed and overstimulated when I have too many kids coming to me at once or when the class gets too loud but I have a few tips that has helped me even with the major behaviors I have.

Set the tone of your classroom. I know that music has a powerful influence on humans, specifically children. When my kids walk in, in the morning,I have soft instrumental music playing. This sets the tone for focus and relaxation.

I greet my students in an intentional manner by saying their name and if they even look like they need a reminder how to do the morning routine I prompt them what they need to do such as, “good morning ——- go unpack your backpack and put your binder away. Thank you. “😊

THE POWER OF WAITING. I do not allow students to talk over me so if they are talking while I am, I simply stop and wait and I’ll usually say, this is my time so I will have to take some of your time to replace mine. I sometimes point to the clock to remind them that time never stops so if they waste it, we have to get it back from our free time. Yelling hurts you just as much as them.

I start showing appreciation for the students who are doing the right thing and they instantly start looking at the student to see what they are doing right to get the attention.

Modeling what you need from them as much as you need is just as important! I model all day until I feel they understand it. If they don’t, they will get tried of trying it again and again until they get it.

Also SEL is soo important, teaching students how to regulate their emotions and actions is soo important! Shout out to @kikoriapp. I use this daily to help my students and they love it!

I resigned my first year of teaching without a job line up because I was already burned out in my first year of teaching! I loved teaching 5th grade and built so many great relationships but didn’t establish healthy boundaries within my job. I was sick in my body and my mental health took a down turn.

After much thought during that summer with no job, I decided to apply to a kindergarten position. Even though I always said, I would never want to teach kindergarten. I felt in my spirit it was time for a change. It was the best decision I could’ve made in my career. I realized the same amount of fun I was having with my fifth graders I could have with my kindergartners. The problems that I saw as a fifth grade teacher I’m now able to address them as a Kindergarten Teacher. There are so many foundational things that students need to be successful in secondary education.

Vulnerable moment while kindergartners are just being kids lol —-I remember this day, there was an assignment that none of us were enthusiastic about doing 😝 . I was also having a rough morning but had to push through it. This was an opportunity for me to teach them a life skill.

Somethings in life we have to do regardless of if it fun or something we want to do. I was on the verge of tears in this video because I knew how they felt because I was feeling the same way. Use teaching as an opportunity to build relationships and teach life lessons. It will go a long way.
