Some moments in travel stay with you longer than the journey itself.

Raulane was one of those moments.

In the quiet village of Kalpa, beneath the peaks of Kinnaur Kailash, the temple courtyard slowly filled with people. Then the drums began.

Masked dancers stepped forward, their faces hidden beneath layers of wool, ornaments and sacred cloth, moving to rhythms that have echoed through these mountains for generations.

Locals believe the rituals honour the mountain fairies and the deities who protect the valley.

Standing there, watching it unfold, it didn’t feel like a show or a performance.

Just a tradition still living in the mountains, carried quietly by the people of Kinnaur.

And for a moment, I was simply there… witnessing it.

The Masroor Rock Cut Temple, located in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, is an 8th-century monolithic temple complex carved from a single sandstone rock. It comprises 15 temples in the Nagara architectural style, with the main shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. The layout resembles a mandala and symbolizes cosmic harmony. The complex faces the Dhauladhar mountain range and features intricate carvings of deities like Vishnu and Lakshmi. A water tank in front reflects the temple beautifully. Despite damage from the 1905 earthquake, it remains a unique heritage site protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, showcasing exceptional ancient Indian craftsmanship.

About Murari Devi Temple :
Situated in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, Murari Devi Temple is a temple built to Goddess Murari, a form of Durga devi. The beautiful temple is set atop the hill of Murari Dhar and stands at around 7,000 feet in the air, showing some of the most beautiful visions of the mountains and valleys.

The Murari Devi Temple history is of very significant local legends and beliefs. It is said that the temple was constructed during the Pandava period, according to local people. The Pandavas, while in exile, are said to have constructed the temple in the name of Goddess Durga, who is worshiped as a goddess of power and a protector.

According to the records, the temple's construction dates back to about 2,000 years ago; however, it is not proved with any exact historical record. The architecture is pretty simple yet very elegant with its intricate wooden carvings in a traditional style of Himachal.

Devotees visit the temple to seek peace, prosperity, and strength blessings. It is very popular during the Navratri festival, where devotees from all regions come to offer prayers and perform rituals. The temple is also significant for its connection to the local community, as it has been a center of worship for generations.

Murari Devi Temple is one of the most prominent pilgrimage sites in Himachal Pradesh, and people visit the place both as pilgrims and tourists because of its religious significance and scenic beauty. The temple can be reached through a motorable road, but for the adventurous, one can trek up to the hilltop. The quiet surroundings and scenic views make it a peaceful retreat for those who seek solace.
