The rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri) is a vibrant green parrot native to Africa and South Asia. Recognizable by its red beak and a distinct rose-colored ring around the neck (in males), this species is highly adaptable, thriving in forests, urban areas, and farmlands. It is an intelligent bird with excellent mimicking abilities, often kept as a pet. Rose-ringed parakeets are social and form large flocks, feeding on fruits, seeds, and flowers. Their loud calls and acrobatic flight make them a prominent presence in cities. Due to their adaptability, they have successfully established populations in Europe and other regions.

The Ring-tailed Lemur (Lemur catta) is one of the most iconic and easily recognizable primates, known for its long, bushy tail with black and white rings. Highly social, they live in female-led groups and spend their time grooming, sunbathing, and foraging. Though native to Madagascar, they adapt well in managed environments. In spring, their diet includes fresh leaves and flowers, which they pick delicately from trees. Their curious and intelligent nature makes them fascinating to observe, especially during feeding. I captured this beautiful moment of a Ring-tailed Lemur enjoying spring blossoms at the Edinburgh Zoo.

The Nilgiri Thrush (Zoothera neilgherriensis) is a rare, elusive bird found only in the montane shola forests of the Western Ghats in southern India. With its spotted underparts, dark upper body, and fluty calls, the thrush is a prized sighting among birdwatchers. Its rarity stems from its restricted range and specific habitat needs, making it vulnerable to environmental changes. The Nilgiri Thrush also serves as an ecological indicator—its presence reflects the health of the shola-grassland ecosystem. Threats like deforestation, human encroachment, and climate change are pushing its habitat to the brink. Protecting this bird goes beyond saving one species—it means safeguarding a fragile, ancient ecosystem rich in endemic life. Its survival symbolizes the Western Ghats’ ecological resilience and the urgent need for focused conservation efforts.

European goldfinches (Carduelis carduelis) are vibrant songbirds that become especially active and visible during spring. With their red faces, black-and-white heads, and golden wing bars, they are easily recognized and admired. Spring marks their breeding season, and they often build neat, cup-shaped nests high in trees or shrubs. Their delicate, twittering song fills the air as males perform display flights to attract mates. Goldfinches feed mainly on seeds, especially from dandelions and thistles, and will visit gardens with seed feeders. As nature awakens in spring, these sociable birds bring color and melody to the countryside, parks, and gardens across Europe.

Mandarin ducks (Aix galericulata), native to East Asia, have established a thriving feral population in the UK after being introduced in the 20th century. Renowned for the male’s spectacular plumage—featuring orange “sails,” iridescent feathers, and a red bill—these ducks are often seen in ornamental lakes, wooded ponds, and rivers. Unlike many native species, Mandarins nest in tree cavities and are excellent climbers. Though not native, they are not considered invasive as they pose little threat to local wildlife. Their striking appearance makes them a favorite among birdwatchers and photographers across the UK, especially in spring during the breeding season.
