Malabar Parakeet — an endemic parrot of the Western Ghats found in forests like Parambikulam Tiger Reserve. These striking green parakeets form strong pair bonds, visible in behaviours such as mutual preening and close contact during mating season. They nest in tree cavities, often those excavated by woodpeckers, and raise clutches of around 4 eggs with both parents feeding the chicks. Feeding mainly on fruits and seeds, they also play a vital role in seed dispersal within their forest home. Although currently stable, their reliance on mature forests underlines the importance of habitat preservation in the Ghats.
