'NORTHERN SOUL' - 5 Years Old Today! I wrote a song last night which had a nostalgic feel to it, completely unaware it was this track's 5 year anniversary today. As I sit here, I've wrote and created almost 3 albums. You have one. One is sat ready to go and will be released this year. The third is well on its way, and I honestly feel like it's a whole different world compared to my other stuff. But, listening back to this, this morning, I feel proud of the quality of the work we've put out on literally next to nothing, and reminded that just being yourself is enough. This track proved that my own story resonates with others, and that no one can tell your story like you can. So note to self, start telling it again! Remember the day when we clashed on Goodwood? Neither of us backed down... that's ENERGY! From a young age, we knew that raps therapy! - When I was 16, I was walking home from basketball on a Monday night at Manor High. Walking past Goodwood field, I saw Josh (Hoodz at the time) and his mate walking towards me. Me and his mate didn't get on at the time, but grew to be friends about 10 years later. Josh said, "RJ, let's clash now!". There weren't many white lads MCing in Sale at the time. Neither of us had lyrics prepared, but we started clashing. He went, then I went, then he went, then I went, and neither of us wanted the other to have the last word. I remember his mate saying, "Nah, you can't let him have the last word." At this point, we weren't even saying anything good. It was just complete young male pride at stake. I can't remember how it ended, but one of us must have obviously said, "Let's leave it there." We shook hands and went on our way. Apart from the other guy there. Nobody knows about that, really. I don't remember us ever speaking about it in front of others. It was a moment. But a moment I've never forgotten! When I wrote 'What's Good, Bro?', whilst it is an honest reflection of how I was personally impacted on hearing the news of Josh's passing and owning my own flaws in dealing with that. I also wanted the song to be relatable to anybody who has experienced something similar with a loved one. We did our best to capture that with the video. However, it wouldn't have felt right without Josh being featured. I have to say a massive thank you to @rilo_jm for providing us with this amazing picture of Josh. @jameskilleendop, @mikebrookes.mcr and @mattwilliamsonsaneja dressed the shot, and @adamandgary added the VFX butterfly to complete it. The butterfly is symbolic for a number of reasons, but most importantly, it was spoke about at Josh's funeral in line with his beliefs of when we exit this world physically, our soul transforms into something else and we are never truly gone. The music is a clip of one of Josh's tracks. A lot of his music can be found on YouTube under the channels Josh Ryan, Journey 11, and The One Ellwood. Despite this being the largest crew we've ever had on a shoot, I'm still not at the level where I can afford to have a stand-in while they line the shot up. So, as I wasn't meant to move much, I asked one of the producers @ijazrana_ if he could pass me a bottle of water. This just so happened to coincide with @jameskilleendop having his camera out, to which he took FULL advantage of the situation 😂. I'm very grateful to the whole crew on this one. It began as a very wet, miserable day, where we were shooting the most important scene of the video. They showed nothing but professionalism the whole way through. All top lads, pulling together for a great cause! In May 2023, we lost a very special man. The most talented artist my area has ever produced. He was a friend of mine. We weren't the closest, and I know there are people who follow me on here who were far closer to him than I ever was. But we shared some memories, and since his passing, I found myself thinking about him most days. The only way I've ever known to truly express myself is to write about it. I wanted to pay my respects through lyrics in some way, but I wasn't sure how. One day, these words came to my mind, and I wrote them down. On the first anniversary of his passing, I had the privilege to perform this track for the first time in front of his closest family and friends at a memorial event. After I'd finished, I asked the people there if they wanted the song to stay there with them, as a one time thing, or if they wanted me to release it properly and hopefully contribute to extending the memory of Josh.
