đŸŽ„ Top Gun (1986)

One of the most recognizable filming locations from Top Gun is Charlie’s house, where Charlie (Kelly McGillis) lived in the film. Originally built in 1888 as the Graves House, the Victorian cottage became a Hollywood icon after appearing in the 1986 classic.

To preserve this historic landmark during redevelopment, the house was carefully relocated in 2020 to its new home near the Oceanside Pier. It later reopened as High-Pie before closing earlier this year. Today, it officially begins its next chapter as An’s Gate D5, an aviation-themed gelato shop.

đŸŽ„ WarGames (1983)

Although WarGames is set in the Seattle area, many of its most memorable scenes were actually filmed right here in Los Angeles. In this scene, Jennifer (Ally Sheedy) gives David Lightman (Matthew Broderick) a ride home on her motorbike after school. As they walk to the front door, they’re greeted by David’s dog, Beau.

This Then & Now features David’s house at 333 S. Arden Blvd. in the Hancock Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. While the movie makes it look like a quiet Pacific Northwest neighborhood, this iconic home has been sitting in the heart of L.A. all along. (Film Locations Guide)

Did you know so much of WarGames was filmed in Southern California while convincing audiences it was Seattle?

đŸŽ„ E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

One of the most unforgettable moments in movie history happens right here.

As Elliott and his friends race away from the police, it looks like they’ve reached a dead end
until E.T. uses his powers to lift the bikes into the air, sending them soaring over the police cars and creating one of the most iconic scenes ever filmed.

The flying bicycle sequence begins as the kids head north on White Oak Avenue from Tribune Street in Granada Hills. They head to Tulsa St. where the police set up a road block. More than 40 years later, this stretch of road is still instantly recognizable to movie fans from around the world. Standing here, it’s easy to imagine that magical moment when the bikes first left the ground.

Have you ever visited this iconic filming location?

đŸŽ„ When Filming Locations Collide

One of my favorite things about filming locations is discovering just how many iconic movies were filmed in the exact same place.

This is the fraternity house from Old School, where the unforgettable party takes place before Frank the Tank (Will Ferrell) decides to go streaking through the neighborhood.

As I pan to the right, you’ll notice something familiar
you’re looking at one of the most famous Back to the Future filming locations! The fraternity house at 1803 Bushnell Ave., South Pasadena is also the house where Biff tosses the ball onto the balcony in Back to the Future Part II.

Just to the right of that is another legendary movie home: Lorraine Baines’ house from Back to the Future. That very same house also served as Scott Howard’s home in Teen Wolf.

And directly across the street at 1800 Bushnell Ave., South Pasadena is the famous tree where George McFly fell while spying on Lorraine, setting Marty McFly’s adventure into motion.

It’s incredible how much movie history is packed into one quiet neighborhood. Next time you watch any of these films, you’ll know you’re looking at one of Southern California’s greatest filming location hotspots.

đŸŽ„ Michael Jackson – Thriller (1983)

One of the most iconic dance sequences in music video history was filmed right here on Union Pacific Avenue near the intersection of South Calzona Street in Boyle Heights. This is where Michael Jackson and the zombies performed the unforgettable “Thriller” dance that has been recreated around the world for more than 40 years.

What’s amazing is how much of the location still matches today. The large white warehouse visible in the background is the same building that was recently at the center of the massive Boyle Heights warehouse fire. I filmed this only a few days after firefighters finally extinguished the blaze following days of battling the flames. It definitely gives this already eerie filming location an even more haunting feel.

đŸŽ„ Better Off Dead (1985)

“I want my two dollars!” đŸ’”đŸšČ

In one of the movie’s funniest running gags, Lane Meyer (John Cusack) is driving his parents’ station wagon when the relentless paperboy, Johnny Gasparini (Demian Slade), suddenly appears on the roof, screaming for the two dollars Lane’s family owes him!

Lane swerves and drives all over the road trying to shake Johnny off, but nothing seems to work. With the paperboy still hanging on, Lane finally takes the station wagon through a car wash in an attempt to get him off the roof. 😂

This sequence was filmed in Burbank, California, along Scott Road, stretching from one side of San Fernando Road to the other near McCambridge Park. The surrounding neighborhood and streets are still very recognizable today, making this a great location to revisit nearly 41 years after the movie was released.

McCambridge Park is also a familiar filming location for movie fans, appearing in Back to the Future and other film and television productions over the years.

The car wash used in the scene has changed hands several times but is still operating as a car wash today.

Nearly 41 years later, you can still follow Lane’s route down Scott Road and visit the spot where Johnny Gasparini refused to give up on collecting his two dollars! đŸ’”đŸ˜‚

đŸŽ„ A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

Welcome to Springwood High School

Near the beginning of A Nightmare on Elm Street, Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp), Tina Gray (Amanda Wyss), Glen Lantz (Johnny Depp), and Rod Lane (Nick Corri, now known as Jsu Garcia) arrive at school and talk about the disturbing dreams they had the night before—dreams that seem to have a terrifying connection.

The exterior of Springwood High School was filmed at John Marshall High School in Los Angeles. The historic campus is one of LA’s most recognizable filming locations and has appeared in countless movies and television shows over the years, including Grease, Rebel Without a Cause, Pretty in Pink, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Grosse Pointe Blank, Can’t Hardly Wait, Bachelor Party, and many more.

A Nightmare on Elm Street also marked the film debut of Johnny Depp, who made his first movie appearance as Glen Lantz.

John Marshall High School has been used for so many productions that you’ve probably seen it on screen more times than you realize. Check out my other reels and posts for more scenes filmed at this legendary location!

Duel (1971)

One of the most suspenseful moments in Duel takes place at this now-unrecognizable location in Acton, California.

After being relentlessly pursued, David Mann (Dennis Weaver) pulls into this gas station hoping for a brief break. The station attendant tells him he needs a new radiator hose, but the mysterious tanker truck soon pulls in beside him. As the unseen driver walks around the truck kicking the tires, David catches a glimpse of the driver’s boots—the only part of the driver ever clearly shown—making the mystery even more unsettling.

The original gas station and laundromat were extensively remodeled years ago and are now a bank, but if you look closely, the house in the background is still standing just as it was in the film.iI

đŸŽ„ Mr. Deeds (2002) – 24 Years Later

Released on this day in 2002, Mr. Deeds turns 24 years old!

One of the funniest moments in the movie comes when Longfellow Deeds (Adam Sandler) surprises “Pam Dawson” (Winona Ryder) with a trip to what he believes is her childhood hometown of Winchestertonfieldville (often misquoted as West Chesterton Field), Iowa. After listening to her describe the house with its blue shutters and big red door, Deeds somehow manages to find the fictional town and proudly walks her right to the “family home”
only for the kids living there to tell them their dad built the house just a few years earlier. Pam’s quick response, “Well, your daddy is a liar!”, makes the scene unforgettable.

While the movie makes it look like small-town Iowa, this entire neighborhood scene was actually filmed in Pasadena, California.

đŸŽ„ “I know you are, but what am I?” 😂

One of the most memorable exchanges in Pee-wee’s Big Adventure happened right here in front of Pee-wee Herman’s house. As Pee-wee heads out for a bike ride, Francis Buxton strolls up, reminds him it’s his birthday, and tries one more time to buy the legendary bike. When Pee-wee refuses, the hilarious back-and-forth begins, setting the stage for the adventure that follows.

This colorful South Pasadena home became one of the most recognizable movie houses of the 1980s and still looks instantly familiar to fans of the film.

📍1848 Oxley St.
South Pasadena, CA

Have you ever visited Pee-wee’s house, or is this still on your filming location bucket list?
