Nikil Saval (D-Philadelphia) remains hopeful that a federal version of the Whole Home Repairs Program will become law despite President Donald Trump threatening to hold up the bipartisan 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act to pressure lawmakers into passing the SAVE ACT, which would disenfranchise possibly tens of millions of Americans.⁣ ⁣ Saval, along with then-State Rep. Home repairs mean stability for a region. Home repairs mean safety for a community. And home repairs mean health and wellbeing for the people who live in them. Hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvania homes are estimated to need critical repairs, and nearly 17,000 people remain on program waitlists. Add on top utility bills and insurance rates, and it’s no wonder so many homeowners are struggling to afford repairs. The Pennsylvania Home Preservation Program is a major step toward disrupting the ongoing cycle of unaffordability and disrepair, speculation, and community displacement. We need to move this bill, pass it, and fund it for years to come.

In my time as a legislator, the solutions to the opioid crisis I’ve seen put forward from Harrisburg have been one-fold: criminalization. This response has not been enough to stem the tide on addiction, overdose, or rapid changes to the drug supply. That’s why I spoke out against SB866, a bill that would classify medetomidine as a Schedule III controlled substance and criminalize its possession. Criminalization only serves to push more people into a system where treatment is scarce, where fear and debt are the norm, and where overdoses are statistically more likely. Three-quarters of Americans support an addiction response that prioritizes public health solutions, like testing strips and housing support. It’s time for policymakers to heed the call of our constituents and put forward solutions that work.

Pennsylvanians can’t afford to fill their gas tanks, put food on the table, or pay their medical bills. And how do Republicans in Washington respond? By passing a $70 billion budget to fund violent, unconstitutional, and unnecessary immigration agencies like ICE for the next three years—doing so right in the middle of Immigrant Heritage Month, no less.   Republicans in Washington think ICE belongs in Pennsylvania. Last week, @jvp_philly and @cairphilly gathered in front of Senator Fetterman’s Philadelphia office demanding divestment from war in Iran, Lebanon and Palestine, and investment in communities across Philadelphia and Pennsylvania. We were joined by Progressive local elected officials @nicorourkephl @ruephilacouncil @senatorsaval @repkrajewski and partner organization @215peoplesalliance @reclaimphiladelphia who attended the protest and spoke powerfully about the ways Fetterman has abandoned his constituents. This action was in response to Sen Fetterman seventh vote on May 13 against the Iran War Powers Resolution for which would have curbed Trump’s power to launch a war without Congress’ approval. Three Republicans crossed the aisle to vote in favor, while Fetterman’s “no” was a decisive factor in the 49-50 defeat. Once again on May 19, Fetterman voted against it for the 8th time. Our elected officials should invest in what makes us actually safe: education, healthcare, housing, good jobs, a healthy environment and keeping families together.
