Some spooky portents from Juliette for spooky season! 🍁✨👻🍁🍂✨

It’s hard to imagine this was almost a year ago. There’s been so much growth and joy and bashing my head into a wall in the practice room since then! But I always seem to find my way back to this lady when I want to find some center.

p.s. I always think the orchestra sounds kind of Lord of the Rings-esque here and it always gives me goose bumps!!!

A wee clip from “Caro nome” with the amazing Brian Cho @bhjcho at the keys!

I always love singing this aria, and it really feels different every time- which is one of the really cool things about this artform. But this one was especially fun because I got to make music with such a fantastic and caring collaborator for @merolaopera ‘s industry day this summer.

I’ve got some fun things cooking that I am excited to share soon!!!

Spoiler Alert! They dont survive!

These last two minutes are probably my favorite moments from Roméo et Juliette. It’s one of those maical moments where the character, story, and music are all one and the same. It’s that magic we all crave when we are experiencing art.

I find myself coming back to this scene all the time, maybe because It fulfills some kind of artistic need. I hope you enjoy this little snippet :)

And thanks to my amazing scene partner, Wonjin Choi @lordvoice_choi , who is always a joy to share the stage with.

The Poison Aria - Roméo et Juliette - November, 2024

_____

This weekend I am singing on the Met stage in the National Semi-Finals of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition!!!

I keep finding myself reflecting on all the growth and “Team Sofia” standing behind me at every junction. And on all of you online and in person who have believed in me so fiercely that I am starting to believe in myself.

I’ve never posted an entire video of my singing on social media before! This feels like a big step for me, but what better time for me to be brave about singing!

I loved singing this Aria. There were so many times I worried I couldn’t do it. And then it was time to perform and I couldn’t wait for this scene to start. It was raw and surreal and beautiful.

Juliette was a role that required me to grow at an exponential rate. I didn’t really believe in myself when I first started learning it. But as it grew with me, I could tell that this role would change my belief in myself as a person and performer.

So as I head into an action-packed weekend, I wanted to give Juliette some love. She taught me so much about myself and what I’m capable of. I’ll be taking her spirit with me to the Met stage this weekend ❤️
