I have been WAITING to share this!!! I still can’t believe it!!! (two posts one day!?!?)

After a beautiful summer at @merolaopera that reaffirmed my artistry and joy in music I am so incredibly thrilled to be joining San Francisco Opera as an Adler Fellow!!!!!

I can’t wait to keep working with this wonderful company full of amazing artists and human beings. Thank you to @carrieannmatheson and @markusbeam for believing in me!

New York has truly become my home and I can’t believe I am leaving my beautiful friends and family I’ve made here. But I’ll be back :)

For now, I can’t believe I get to go back to the Bay Area, where I grew up, and do what I love. I feel so incredibly lucky and am tearing up just writing this!

Thank you to everyone who has supported me- for my whole life. I couldn’t do any of this without my wise and wonderful teacher, Ruth Golden @ruthgoldenvocalnotes , and all the fabulous coaches and faculty at at @msm.nyc by @sofia.gotch

Spoiler Alert! They dont survive!

These last two minutes are probably my favorite moments from Roméo et Juliette. It’s one of those maical moments where the character, story, and music are all one and the same. It’s that magic we all crave when we are experiencing art.

I find myself coming back to this scene all the time, maybe because It fulfills some kind of artistic need. I hope you enjoy this little snippet :)

And thanks to my amazing scene partner, Wonjin Choi @lordvoice_choi , who is always a joy to share the stage with.

Finally posting some headshots taken by the lovely @studiococonyc !

Currently, I’m in San Francisco with @merolaopera , and it’s been an amazing experience. The last year has been a bit of a whirlwind, and I’ve been feeling a bit disconnected from the “why” of music making. But this summer I am really exploring what it means to be my own artist and remember why I love what I do.

I have no idea what the future holds, but I’m happy to be where I am :)

Oh! And for my friends in the Bay Area! Come see the Merola Grand Finale on August 16th at the War Memorial Opera House! Head to the link in my bio for more info on the event and tickets.

Ok! That’s all! Thank you for engaging with my headshots (even though it feels so weird to post them!) and my sappy but important (for me) little message ❤️ by @sofia.gotch

I’m writing this as my plane takes off for San Francisco from NYC.

I’ve become more me over the past four-and-a-half years than I ever knew was possible. I love my friends. I love my family. I love the life I created here. They have shown me so much about who I am and who I can be.

And while I’m so excited for the next chapter, it’s with the deepest sadness that I say goodbye (for now).

Even though I’m from the Bay Area, I can’t say I left my heart in San Francisco… It’s here in New York with my wonderful friends and family and little tiny stinky dog ❤️ by @sofia.gotch

Some spooky portents from Juliette for spooky season! 🍁✨👻🍁🍂✨

It’s hard to imagine this was almost a year ago. There’s been so much growth and joy and bashing my head into a wall in the practice room since then! But I always seem to find my way back to this lady when I want to find some center.

p.s. I always think the orchestra sounds kind of Lord of the Rings-esque here and it always gives me goose bumps!!!

The last two weeks I got to do something very incredible and very humbling! I participated in a workshop of “The Mothers of Kherson” by Maxim Kolomiiets at the Metropolitan Opera singing the role of “Dasha,” one of the opera’s three mothers braving war zones to rescue her child.

It all started with the Laffont Competition at the Met this past Spring and culminated in this opportunity to be a part of a truly impactful artistic process and body of work based on real events happening in Ukraine.

It was surreal to say “I’m off to work” and commute to the Met each day. Surreal, but also exciting, challenging, and inspiring! Thank you to all my lovely colleagues who put so much of themselves into this workshop ❤️ I’m so grateful to everyone who has believed in me and helped me get to this point as I begin my career!

Head to the Met in 2027 to see the premiere of what will surely be an amazing production where Erin Morley will sing this same role!!! Wow!!!

I’m really excited to share what I have coming up next (soon, I hope!). Until then, enjoy some silly BTS content from my time at the Met this Spring and this Fall, and a photo of my dog sunbathing in our little music room during a practice session 🥰 taken in The Metropolitan Opera by @sofia.gotch

A wee clip from “Caro nome” with the amazing Brian Cho @bhjcho at the keys!

I always love singing this aria, and it really feels different every time- which is one of the really cool things about this artform. But this one was especially fun because I got to make music with such a fantastic and caring collaborator for @merolaopera ‘s industry day this summer.

I’ve got some fun things cooking that I am excited to share soon!!!

If your feed is filled with ghost stories and love stories, you’re gonna love this one and should join us TOMORROW for the Merola Grand Finale – Aug 16 | 7:30pm | War Memorial Opera House | 🎟️ Merola.org/summerfestival

🌹Berlioz: “La spectre de la rose” from Les nuits d’été
A dreamlike visit from the spirit of a rose worn to a ball. This French art song floats and shimmers, with gorgeous lines and romantic imagery.

💀 Schubert/Berlioz: “Erlkönig” (arr. Berlioz),
A wild ride through fear, hallucination, and tragedy as a father tries to save his son from a supernatural threat. Multiple characters, one singer, no breathing room.

🌳Moore: “Willow Song” from The Ballad of Baby Doe
In this tender moment, Baby Doe sings of the willow tree, a symbol of love that bends but never breaks. She vows to stay constant through every storm, a promise that will echo through the rest of her life.

Next up for #MeroliniMondays is ⭐ Sofia Gotch @sofia.gotch, our dazzling soprano from just across the Bay in Oakland, California! 🎶✨

🎭Sofia’s major roles include Juliette "Roméo et Juliette"; La Fée "Cendrillon"; Tytania "A Midsummer Night’s Dream"; Sharp Ears "The Cunning Little Vixen"; Polly Peachum "Threepenny Opera"; and Cinderella "Into the Woods".

🎼 Sofia’s musical journey began in choir, where she discovered her love for singing and performance, eventually leading her to double major in English and Music. After graduation, Sofia knew she needed music in her life, which led her to apply to conservatories – and now she’s a Merolini!🎵

Outside of opera, Sofia loves hiking, exploring new places, baking, and spending quality time with friends and family. ❤ She’s thrilled to return home to the Bay Area this summer and do what she loves most—making music!

✨Are you new to Merola Opera Program? Join us this summer to meet #TheFutureOfOpera. Learn more at merola.org ✨

The Poison Aria - Roméo et Juliette - November, 2024

_____

This weekend I am singing on the Met stage in the National Semi-Finals of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition!!!

I keep finding myself reflecting on all the growth and “Team Sofia” standing behind me at every junction. And on all of you online and in person who have believed in me so fiercely that I am starting to believe in myself.

I’ve never posted an entire video of my singing on social media before! This feels like a big step for me, but what better time for me to be brave about singing!

I loved singing this Aria. There were so many times I worried I couldn’t do it. And then it was time to perform and I couldn’t wait for this scene to start. It was raw and surreal and beautiful.

Juliette was a role that required me to grow at an exponential rate. I didn’t really believe in myself when I first started learning it. But as it grew with me, I could tell that this role would change my belief in myself as a person and performer.

So as I head into an action-packed weekend, I wanted to give Juliette some love. She taught me so much about myself and what I’m capable of. I’ll be taking her spirit with me to the Met stage this weekend ❤️
