Church, Chora, Chersonese – a new video installation by CST (Center for Spatial Technologies) is now on view at @jamfactory.artcenter as part of The Stammering Circle exhibition, curated by Marta Kuzma. This two-channel work traces the archaeological site of Chersonesos in Crimea through historical imagery: maps, drawings, photographs, aerial reconnaissance, archival footage, and news reports. The narrative centers on three “characters”: Church—sacred structures found, built, destroyed, and rebuilt over time; Chora—the ancient Greek agricultural grid accidentally captured by military reconnaissance; Chersonese—the ancient walled city, constantly re-excavated and reinterpreted for political purposes. The installation visualizes how archaeology intertwines with politics—the paradox of a discipline shaped by ideology while claiming objective “knowledge.” The alliance between military, church, and archaeology from the late 1700s–early 1800s re-emerges in contemporary Russian occupation, creating a dizzying sense of historical repetition. The work loops continuously, mirroring these cycles of history. В цей день 16 березня 2022 року на будівлю Маріупольського драматичного театру було скинуто авіабомбу армією Російської Федерації. Напередодні удару театр слугував сховком для тисяч цивільних. Досліджуючи російську атаку на Маріупольський драматичний театр команда Центру просторових технологій створила «Просторовий архів». Цей сайт-архів поєднав у собі усі дослідницькі напрацювання та став своєрідною рефлексією команди на взаємодію з мешканцями Драмтеатру. Команда CST зібрала та проаналізувала тисячі фотографій, відео, супутникових знімків та публікацій у соціальних мережах, а також записала понад 100 годин розмов зі свідк_инями. Сайт складається з просторових та глибинних інтерв’ю зі свідк_инями, а також діаграм, візуалізацій та 3D моделей, які надають результатам дослідження просторовий вимір. У результаті роботи також було підготовлено три дослідницькі тексти, що висвітлюють роль театру як укриття та аналізують наслідки атаки. Сайт можна переглянути за посиланням у шапці профілю. ENG On this day, on March 16, 2022, the Russian Federation army dropped a bomb on the building of the Mariupol Drama Theater. The theater served as a shelter for thousands of civilians before the attack. While researching the Russian attack on the Mariupol Drama Theater, the team of the Center for Spatial Technologies created the Spatial Archive. This website combines all the research findings and has become a sort of team’s reflection on the interaction with the Drama Theater’s residents. The CST team collected and analyzed thousands of photographs, videos, satellite images, and social media posts, and recorded over 100 hours of interviews with witnesses. The website consists of spatial and in-depth interviews with witnesses, as well as diagrams, visualizations, and 3D models that add a spatial dimension to the research. The work also resulted in three research texts that highlight the role of the theater as a shelter and analyze the aftermath of the attack. The website can be view at the link in the profile header. CST research is a part of the exhibition “ETH with Ukraine — Exchanging Knowledge for a Sustainable and Resilient Future”. The exhibition delineates the interdisciplinary and transnational projects fuelling ongoing and future reconstruction efforts in Ukraine. This exhibition shows joint projects developed in cooperation with Ukrainian members of the network based in Switzerland and partner organizations in Ukraine. The Center for Spatial Technologies presents the film “A city within a building” as part of the exhibition. Valeria Prorizna and Myhailo Bogachov will introduce the film and stay for questions about its production history and the nuances of cross-border collaboration during wartime. Valeria Prorizna is a Ukrainian filmmaker and film programmer. Worked as creative producer of “A City within a Building.” Mykhailo Bogachov is a Ukrainian researcher in music and philosophy of AI. Центр просторових технологій разом з @forensicarchitecture представили дослідження про російський обстріл Київської телевежі на віртуальній виставці Tracing the Geometry of Cyberwar в @pratergalerie . Виставка проходить в інтерактивній формі онлайн та налічує проєкти, які висвітлюють важливі аспекти кібервійни та її вплив на сучасне суспільство. 1 березня 2022 року Росія завдала ракетного удару по Київській телевежі, що призвело до пошкодження цього історичного місця. CST спільно з Forensic Architecture дослідили атаку, її вплив на міський простір та суспільство. Удар по телевежі не був особливо ефективним у військовому плані поряд з іншими обстрілам у війні Росії проти України. Однак не можна недооцінювати важливість нападу на головну телевізійну та радіовежу країни, особливо у війні, що ведеться тією ж мірою за контроль над наративами, як і за території та їх жителів. Виставка фокусується на тому, як зображення і дані поширюються в кіберпросторі, та де інтернетова логіка змішується з військовими подіями. У світі постійних онлайн-комунікацій зображення, новини та реклама переплітаються, що створює складну картину реальності. Моніторинг соцмереж, поширення картинок та дезінформації в інтернеті стають інструментами для контролю і формують певні наративи про війну. Експозиція відображає три напрями кібервійни, натхненні дослідженнями дослідниці Світлани Матвієнко. Художні позиції та дискурсивні тексти рухаються трьома шляхами (векторами) кібервійни — націлені на людей та інфраструктуру в окупованій Україні, зосереджені на країнах, що підтримують Україну, та включаючи саму Російську Федерацію. Виставка працює кожен день з 10:00 до 16:00. We contributed to "The Nebelivka Hypothesis"; an installation by @forensicarchitecture and David Wengrow presented at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, Laboratory of the Future, curated by Leslie Locco. "Deep beneath the rich black soil of central Ukraine, archaeologists have discovered human settlements as large and ancient as the first Mesopotamian cities but created on radically different principles. One of these places is the village of Nebelivka in central Ukraine, where located the remains of an ancient settlement. The 6000-year-old remains offer a lens through which to question fundamental assumptions about urban space, power, and ecology. The settlement demonstrates that the evolution of human civilization from hunter-gatherers to farmers and urbanists does not necessarily mean racism, hierarchies, exploitation, and authoritarian governments — critical engagement with new research methods that challenge our basic assumptions about the origins and possibilities of cities." We traveled to the village of Nebelivka to document the stories of local dwellers and farmers working on the site of the ancient city. The video produced by CST is part of the exposition that is still available for viewing at the Venice Arsenale.

The Russian Federation military’s air strike on Mariupol Drama Theater during the siege of Mariupol in February-May 2022 destroyed a key shelter — and one of the city’s last centers of solidarity and civil resistance. “A City Within a Building” is the first stage of the Center for Spatial Technologies’ research into the attack, created in partnership with Forensis and Forensic Architecture. In the short period from the beginning of the escalation of the war on February 24, 2022, until the bombing on March 16, the space of the Mariupol Drama Theater became a shelter for at least 2000 residents. Lacking access to food, water, electricity, information, and safe evacuation routes, the people who took refuge there formed a special community, a city within a building, interacting with its architecture and rearranging it to their common needs. On 20th March 2023, we will present the first chapter of the research on Mariupol theatre airstrike at the Gropius Bau Cinema @gropiusbau. The official launch will feature a short film – ‘A City within a Building’ – and an online ‘archive’, making public a set of previously unseen materials from Mariupol, including 3D models, photos, digital ‘artefacts’, testimonies, and videos produced in collaboration with more than 20 survivors of the attack. Following a premiere event in Kyiv, CST director Maksym Rokhmaniko @maksy_taxi and Forensic Architecture @forensicarchitecture director Eyal Weizman will deliver a multi-part lecture introducing the project and screening the film, followed by a discussion.
