The Mariupol Drama Theater airstrike on 16 March 2022 was an appalling milestone in the early weeks of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Shortly after the full-scale invasion on 24 February, the space of the Donetsk Academic Regional Drama Theater in Mariupol became a shelter for approximately 2,000 civilians. With no access to food, water, electricity, information and safe evacuation routes, the people hiding there formed a special community – a city in a theater. The building became not only a shelter but a center of mutual care that fed, clothed, traded with other sheltering communities, and exercised collective decision-making, becoming a full and functioning city within a single building.

The word "CHILDREN" ("ДІТИ") was written on the ground outside to avoid the theater being considered a military target. Nevertheless, a Russian missile struck the building in what was among the deadliest airstrikes against civilians since the war started. Since Russia took control of Mariupol on 20 May, occupying authorities have systematically manipulated and erased evidence about the strike on the theater. In late 2022, the theater was surrounded by screening and bulldozed to the ground.

The CST (@spatialtech.info), Forensis (@counterinvestigations) and Forensic Architecture (@forensicarchitecture) gathered and analyzed thousands of photos, videos, and social media posts, and recorded over 100 hours of never-before-seen witness testimony to reconstruct a picture of the tragedy in the besieged theater. The methodology makes it possible to conduct an investigation even when there is no physical access to premises, thus not postponing the moment of justice for the future.
