Content by the one the only : @sogoldencontent I think one of the biggest mistakes couples make when they’re looking for a wedding photographer is assuming they’re only hiring someone because they like the photos. You are, but you’re also choosing someone who’s going to spend more time with you on your wedding day than almost anyone else. I’ll be there while you’re getting ready, standing next to you before the ceremony when the nerves hit, keeping family photos moving, reminding you to breathe, making sure you actually have a minute alone together, and probably hearing stories that only your closest people know. That’s why I always tell people to pay attention to personality just as much as the portfolio. Beautiful photos are important, but if you don’t enjoy being around the person behind the camera, you’re going to feel it all day long. Your wedding shouldn’t feel like a photo shoot—it should feel like your wedding, with someone documenting it who naturally fits into the day. I joke that I’m the personality hire, but there’s honestly some truth to that. I want my couples to feel like they have another friend in the room instead of someone barking orders behind a camera. The best photos usually happen when you forget you’re being photographed in the first place, and that only happens when you’re comfortable with the person standing in front of you. So yes, fall in love with the editing style. But also ask yourself, “Would I actually want to spend ten hours with this person?” Because when the cake is gone and the flowers have wilted, you’ll have the photos—but the experience of creating them matters just as much. If you’ve always dreamed of seeing your fiancé for the very first time as you walk down the aisle, don’t let anyone convince you otherwise. If you’re nervous and want a quiet moment together before the ceremony, a first touch can be a beautiful way to slow down and breathe while still having the first look down the aisle. If spending as much of cocktail hour as possible with your family and friends is a priority, a first look can also give you more time to celebrate with them. There isn’t a “correct” choice—only the choice that’s right for you. Bring these conversations to your photographer, planner, and vendor team. A strong team won’t pressure you into one option; they’ll help you understand the pros and cons so you can make a decision that reflects your priorities. 100 getting ready moments. 100 vows. 100 couple portraits. 100 .5 photos with each couple. 100 dance floors. 100 times asking the planner to save me a slice of cake. And somehow, after all of that, wedding number 100 still felt special. Amelia + Canyon, thank you for letting me celebrate this milestone with you. You two were an absolute joy, and I couldn’t have imagined a better couple to mark this day with. The love you have for each other, the love you have for the Lord, and the incredible vendor team that made everything come together made this one unforgettable. As I look back on these last 100 weddings, I’m reminded that every gallery delivered, every early morning, every late-night drive to the hotel, every prayer whispered before a ceremony, and every couple trusted to me has been evidence of the Lord’s faithfulness. None of this is something I deserve, and none of it has happened apart from Him.
