Thank you to the legend Michelle Nicolini @miznicolini for taking us through this special no-gi class on Thursday evening which served as a fundraiser to deliver lifesaving support & humanitarian aid to the people of Palestine & Lebanon. Big thanks to @leila.bjj for helping us organise this event and of course huge thank you & gratitude to everyone who participated, especially those who couldn’t attend but still reached out to support the cause. Together we raised over $4500 which will go directly to the @palestineredcrescent and @lebaneseredcross.

It was a privilege to host this event and an honour to share the mats with you Michelle, you have our love, respect & admiration forever. 🫶

🚨 Red Zone Knife Defense Workshop 🔪

What a great day at Origem! Huge thanks to Felipe @thebjjcoach for sharing his knowledge and experience with us — years of work in the police and security field brought straight to the mats. 🙏🏼

We went deep into mindset, awareness, and realistic defenses against knife threats. This training isn’t about being a hero — it’s about being prepared and protecting ourselves and our loved ones.

At Origem, we value self-defense just as much as the sportive side of Jiu-Jitsu. Competing is fun and powerful, but it’s equally important is to keep Jiu-Jitsu effective in real life aswell — to stay safe, confident, and ready.

Big thank you as well to everyone who came to support and learn — your energy and commitment made the day special. 💥

Red Zone Knife Defence Seminar with Professor Felipe Grez

This past weekend, we had an incredible Self-Defence Seminar focused on the Red Zone Knife Defence system, led by Professor Felipe Grez.

Students learned practical, reality-based techniques to defend against edged weapon threats, using Jiujitsu fundamentals combined with the Red Zone system, a method trusted by military and law enforcement worldwide. The seminar covered essential concepts like distance management, control tactics, and survival strategies, giving everyone a deeper understanding of how to react under pressure.

A huge thank you to Professor Felipe for sharing his expertise and to all the students who stepped up to challenge themselves and expand their knowledge. Self-defence is a skill you hope to never use—but one that can make all the difference. 💪

Sir Isaac Newton is quoted for saying “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants”.

Here are a few of the giants that I have had the benefit of learning from in the first 15 years of Jiu Jitsu training up until Black Belt. This is by no means an exhaustive list, and there are many others who have had a huge influence on me, my Jiu Jitsu, the way that I teach, mentor and interact with others both on and off the mat. However a lot of those giants lessons were pre social media and I am yet to dig up a lot of those old photos…

For those of you not on here, know that you and your contributions still mean the world to me and I will be forever grateful! 🙏 And I will work to dig up some more of those old photos and pay my respects to as many of you as I can. Thank you and keep making a positive impact and changing the world through Jiu Jitsu! 🥋

Why is it that some people are high performance athletes/technicians on the mat that are able to dominate and execute their techniques against everyone, yet they are not great at teaching or explaining how someone else can replicate their performance? 🤷🏻‍♂️
.
.
The best way I have heard it explained was by Dr @rhadiferguson . The way he explained it was the difference between technical proficiency and cognitive ability. Now I got a little off track in this freestyle talk and you can definitely learn more about it from Rhadi but the general message is good and helpful for someone who wants to be a better teacher. 🎓
.
.
Too wrap up, it comes down to understanding that to be a good teacher/coach, you need to dive deep into the art and learn that teaching is an entirely different skill set to be developed. You also need to develop your communication skills and learn about adult learners and the basics around how they learn. Making an effort to do so, will help you become a better teacher!🥋

PS Those of you reading this far may have caught my error in the video in the lack of additional information around the mix of technical proficiency and performance ability verses cognitive ability. However the overall message remains sound and I am sure it can still help a lot of people! 😃

Getting better at Jiu Jitsu, faster, is something that we all aspire to, however not something that you work effectively towards every session. It’s my goal to help you change that!
.
.
In this video I talk about failing forwards and rolling to learn! And how doing so will help you get better at Jiu Jitsu much faster!
.
.
Jiu Jitsu is a complex skill and as such, you need to approach it with an open mind and ready to learn. You need to experiment, course correct and learn from your mistakes! I believe that rolling to learn is the best way to do this.

If you want to improve consistently, you need to Train and more importantly, you need to Plan your Jiu Jitsu training each week!🥋🤼
.
.
We all have busy lives and obstacles that pop up and get in the way of getting to Jiu Jitsu and that’s ok. But if you want to dramatically improve your learning curve, then you need to plan your trading time that you will dedicate to Jiu Jitsu each week. 📖
.
.
By spending some time thinking about which sessions you can attend, when do you you have free time for additional session/s and what you are going to work on this week, you give your learning process some structure! 🧠
