Today I had the pleasure of attending an amazing seminar on the De La Riva Guard with @euberg10 . And I have to say, it was an incredible learning experience! From the moment the seminar started, Gutemberg started building and working towards a holistic approach to De La Riva system that he likes to play. Beginning with entering the position safely and efficiently, then spending a bunch of time working on how to off balance your opponent from there using various different grips to address problems or opportunities presented. While working through the positions Gutemberg seamlessly wove in some key details and concepts that he looks for while playing the position as well as outlining a strong strategy and game plan from the DLR. This was followed by chaining various off balances together and incorporating transitions into some strong sweep attacks and open guard transitions.A huge thank you to Professor Gutemberg for sharing some of your amazing Jiu Jitsu techniques in such a structured and well thought out system and delivery. It was definitely a game changer and I look forward to building the concepts and details into my game.Thank you Professor @egorrochabjj for bringing in such high level Jiu Jitsu instructors to share with the @evolvebjjhq team. You were right, Gutemberg is an incredible teacher and taught an amazing session! Finally, thank you to one of the best training partners I could ever ask for in my oldest son Hunter. Your day is coming and I can’t wait to see you reach your potential. The sky is the limit! by @thebjjcoach

Appreciation Post: On Sunday, I decided to swing by and support the @nswbjjf Autumn Cup with my Jiu Jitsu senpai and brother from another mother, @adam.s.kayoom.23 . Upon entering Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre, we bumped in to the man responsible for 25 years of promoting and growing the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu through the NSW BJJ Federation, 6th degree black belt and pioneer of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in NSW, @pauloguimaraesbjj .Always smiling, warm and hospitable, Paulo invited us for a a chat to catch up. We discussed the the early days of the Federation competitions, our current training and he shared some amazing plans, he has in the works for the near future. As we were sitting there at the entrance to the venue, Paulo suggested we take a photo to celebrate the moment, and remember a past filled with many great memories of fighting many matches as a white, blue and purple belt for myself. And watching Adam fight there too as a blue, purple and possibly brown belt (I can’t quite remember 🤔) against other pioneers of the sport.Incidentally the very backdrop of the photo was one of halls where the NSW BJJ Federation competitions all began, so it was both a fitting and nostalgic moment for us all. So I thought I’d take a moment to thank and honour Master @pauloguimaraesbjj for his dedication to promoting the art of Jiu Jitsu in NSW and Australia. Paulo was the first Brazilian Black Belt to move to Australia and open up a Jiu Jitsu academy in NSW. A warrior both on and off the mat, Paulo has worked tireless for 25 years now to provide opportunities for the next generation to share the mats and compete under the banner of the @nswbjjf . Thank you for everything that you have done for the Jiu Jitsu community, and the work you continue to put in to grow the federation an open up@more opportunities for Jiu Jitsu athletes, coaches and teams. Muito obrigado, Mestre! by @thebjjcoach

Coaching in Jiu Jitsu is an art! And just because someone is a black belt or a champion competitor, doesn’t necessarily mean that they will be a great coach. 🥋 The ability to coach effectively is a skill which is comprised of many sub skills such as:- the ability to inspire and connect with students - the ability organise and teach the content in a simple and digestible format for varying levels of ability in a class- caring, attention to detail, feedback and engagement with the students Last Sunday, I got to share in a masterclass of world@class coaching with my coach @miznicolini at @portstephensbjj . What made this session particularly special on top of the learning as a student and as a coach, was that I got to share this experience with my family, friends and team. My family loved the session, and both @harveysfightclub and @timtwo11 got to share the experience with their lineage. A huge thank you to the Port Stephens BJJ crew and everyone who came out to support! 🙏 I couldn’t have asked for a better end to the visit, safe travels coach and until next time! by @thebjjcoach

Last Friday night was a special day in which my coach Michelle Nicolini, filmed her first instructional video series for @bjj.fanatics !As a student, fan and black belt under Michelle Nicolini (@miznicolini ), it was a great experience to watch how well she was able to break down, explain and systemise some of her infamous Nicolini Spider Guard (Shin Spider) system and connecting open guards. A huge thank you to Dan Valimont for being the consummate professional and making it such a smooth experience. Thank you Liban for allowing us to use @levelsbjj to record in, and thank you to Leila for stepping in as a last minute uke for Michelle.I am looking forward to the release of this set in the coming months as a great learning and reference tool for students and coaches alike! by @thebjjcoach

It is with great pleasure that I had the chance to promote @paulsmibert to his long overdue 2nd Degree Black Belt, after one of his classes at @opensparring today. Paul is as dedicated a Jiu Jitsu student as you will ever meet. Super technical, a sharp mind and passionate about Jiu Jitsu. Paul has dedicated his life to the art, and overcome so many challenges to become on the best instructors that I know!I always enjoy dropping in as a student for one of his classes when I can find the time. Thank you for the technical refinements with K Guard Leg attacks today mate, I look forward to both implementing them and teaching them to my boys! by @thebjjcoach

Canberra Trip Photo Dump!On Tuesday night, I had the pleasure of visiting Matt D’Aquino and the @beyondgrapplingclub team to teach a combined Judo and Jiu Jitsu class on the topic of Armbar control and grip releases/breaks.After that, with the blessing of my coach @miznicolini , I promoted Matt to his 2nd degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Matt is an outstanding human, friend, coach, and role model to the Grappling community both on and off the mats, in person with his students and online through the vast content that he produces for Martial Artists and Grapplers all around he world! It is an honour to watch him grow and continue to develop both as a technician and coach of Jiu Jitsu. And it was extremely cool to share this moment with so many members of the Beyond Grappling Club team.Next up was another special occasion! After watching Mod teach a great No Gi Jiu Jitsu class, I felt privileged to watch Matt promote @bjj.mod to Black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This special occasion marked Beyond Grappling Club’s first black belt promotion and it was fitting to see such a passionate and talented individual such as Mod to receive this. Congrats Mod, so well deserved mate! It was made even more special by the fact that it was a surprise grading for Mod, and so many great people came out to share in this momentous occasion, including Mod’s first coach, and old school Jiu Jitsu black belt @tenbu.tma.bjj . It was so good to have you there mate, and we are way overdue for a proper catch up!Finally, on Wednesday night I taught a seminar at @darkcarnival_cbr on Tripod Passing, which is something I have been implementing into my game a lot more as of late! A huge thank you to Mitch and @dandarkcarnival for your hospitality and the team at Dark Carnival for bringing some great energy, and thoughtful questions to the session! Great vibe on the mat and I thoroughly enjoyed my time working with the team and am looking forward to the next session. by @thebjjcoach

One of the things I most enjoy about Jiu Jitsu is the friendships that you make and build every time you step on the mats to train! Today I had the pleasure of joining a class with my Jiu Jitsu brother, Adam Kayoom at @equinoxmartialarts . @adam.s.kayoom.23 was one of my coaches when I first started Jiu Jitsu 27+ years ago at Absolute Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, along with Chris De Weaver @cdeweaver and Luke Picklum @dunkspunk2018 .Almost 3 decades later and their fingerprints are still visible in my game, the way I look at, think about and teach Jiu Jitsu. I am blessed to have met such great and passionate coaches who still inspire me to improve to this day. Thank you for another great class Adam! I love learning new perspectives and approaches to techniques, both as a student and a coach, and today was another awesome experience. And to my new friends at Equinox, thank you for the amazing work that you are doing to build such a great culture and learning environment for your students! It is fast becoming one of my favourite places to train at whenever I am in Sydney! If you live near the area and want to try some Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thai, I couldn’t recommend a better place to get started. The team here are warm, welcoming and will make sure that you have great learning experience. 🥋 🥊 Here’s to Jiu Jitsu bringing people together from all walks of life, building friendships, improving both physical and mental health, fitness and overall wellbeing. And that’s before I even mention the confidence and self defence benefits! by @thebjjcoach

Last Saturday I had the honour of promoting @harveysfightclub and @timtwo11 to black belt in Jiu Jitsu at @portstephensbjj . Both of these men being life long martial artists, dedicated Jiu Jitsu practitioners, and all round good people! What was particularly special, was the amount of black belt coaches that came to attend the seminar and celebrate their grading. After promoting these two gentlemen to black belt, I realised we had 15 black belts on the mat from 6-7 different academies around the area, and more in attendance in the crowd. In a day and age where politics sometimes gets the better of a lot of people and academies, and affiliations, it was heart warming to see everyone come together and celebrate this amazing milestone grading. This is one of the greatest gifts that Jiu Jitsu gives people, community. And it is a testament to each of their characters that so many great coaches were able to come, support and make this moment so special!I believe a black belt in Jiu Jitsu is one of the greatest accomplishments that an individual can ever make in their lives. It often marks well over a decade of dedication to training, learning, overcoming obstacles and hardships both on and off the mat, building relationships and contributing to the development of the next generation through sharing the art of Jiu Jitsu with others. And it was fitting to celebrate this monumental achievement in the presence of those who had gone before them, those who had shared the journey with them, those who have come after them, as well as family and friends.Personally, it was a special moment and as I was walked across to get the black belts, I felt pretty choked up with emotion and wondered whether I would be able to get the words out. But just like in Jiu Jitsu, you breathe, clear your head, think and do what needs to be done.A huge congratulations to both gentlemen on your black belts. The path you have walked is not easy, nor is it for everyone, but you have both done it your own way. With blood, sweat, sacrifice and dedication to becoming the best versions of yourselves. Welcome to black belt! OSS. by @thebjjcoach
