The Spain textile tour finished on Monday: from the Prado, the Museo del Traje, The Royal Tapestry workshop, and the streets of Madrid to Corpus Christi in Toledo and Lagartera! We learned about art, history, Spanish cuisine and culture, and tried a few stitches in the colorful and elaborate embroidery traditions of Lagartera. Thank you to the participants, our guides, and teachers!
Interested in attending next year in late May? Email sarah@threadwritten for early notification this fall.

Corpus Christi in Largartera today! A few images of people in their traditional clothing and one of the many street altars displaying family textiles made for the young bride’s bed. The Corpus Christi procession began in 1590 celebrating the sacrament as the body of Christ and continues today as an important Catholic religious celebration. The displays show the evolution of filet lace, embroidery, cut felt work, and printed textiles used together to honor the Eucharist.

Many thanks to our tour guide who showed us the altars, a translator, and the community for sharing their traditions!
Lovely to see our embroidery teachers along the route!

Tonight is our last night together on the Spain cultural textile tour.

Lavradeira embroidery is a vivid, floral feast for the eyes, bursting with rich blues and reds. Its distinctive blooms emerge from a lacy net of delicate linework, nestled among sweet heart motifs.

In Viana do Castelo, Portugal, traditional and festival dress takes the form of the lavradeira (or farm girl) costume, established aesthetically in the 19th century. The outfits are a more festive development of domingar, the clothes typically worn on Sundays and at market. Lavradeira costumes are a feat of local craftsmanship, from weaving to embroidery. Each element of the multi-layered attire is liberally embroidered with bright floral motifs, making for a truly amazing sight. Partnered with the fullness of the traditional skirt, this elaborate embroidery style leaves ample room for delightful, complex designs.

As part of TATTER's World Embroidery series, researcher and artist Sarah Pedlow (@threadwritten) will lead a virtual workshop on Lavradeira Portuguese Embroidery, encompassing both its history and unique stitches. Join us on June 25th to explore this beautiful living tradition!

The folk art of Kalotaszeg, a region of 34 villages in Transylvania, is a rich and elaborate tradition. Spanning from wood carvings and furs to numerous complex weaves and embellishments, they are best known for Írásos, or written embroidery. These elaborate embroideries date back to the late 18th century, drawn exclusively by "writing-women" who replicate these elaborate designs from memory onto fabric. Often, a single writing woman would provide designs for at least half the makers of her village.

On April 2nd, join TATTER and Sarah Pedlow of @threadwritten for a virtual workshop on Írásos. Through this in-depth cultural experience, you'll learn the intricate history of this beautiful art form, enhanced by Sarah's experience and knowledge of the region, and leave with a new textile tradition to incorporate into your practice.
