What was your first read of the year?

I had a really solid start with Wings of Starlight by @allisonhsaft . I knew I was going to love it even before I started reading but the first page alone had me HOOKED. Allison’s writing is soooooo good and descriptive it felt like the magic was literally dripping off the pages like liquid gold!

I expected this book to be a simple and cute fantasy romance but I was pleasantly surprised with so much more. It discusses important topics such as women in leadership, sacrifice, self doubt, and finding the strength to do what needs to be done regardless of your fears. It’s extremely relatable, admirable and inspirational with how selfless and brave Queen Clarion is.

The only thing is that I just wish the ending were more sad, it had so much potential to be gut wrenchingly devastating but unfortunately it just wasn’t. I wanted it to squeeze my heart, make me ugly cry for at least 30 mins and question what truly matters in life. Other that this, every other aspect of the book is perfect and I would highly recommend you read it!

Ngl the series should have just been a trilogy 😭 The previous book (Specials) has a really solid ending. Extras mainly explores the concept of popularity and how far people would go to become popular, who they would betrayal and how they would justify their actions. Yes, it’s a good topic to discuss but the execution wasn’t necessarily my favorite. It would have been more enjoyable as a shorter novella with proper character development – just when you think a character is given the opportunity to learn from their mistakes they immensely disappoint you, it’s just extremely petulant imo even for teenagers.

I did enjoy certain aspects of the book like the bond between the friend group and the pet hovercam, Ren (he’s a smart and handsome side character, sue me), and the revelation at the end was surprisingly rational and worth reading.

My verdict? Read the first three in the series and skip this last one. If he writes a sequel series this whole book can fit in one page as the intro, lol.

What’s a trope you draw the line on?

This was one hell of a journey! There was always something happening and somewhere that needed to be reached which was really fun to read.

I don’t know why but I just wasn’t able to emotionally connect with the characters. Found family is my favorite trope and it’s a bit sad that as the books keep progressing, their relationships aren’t. Also, the whole cutting thing was a bit too intense for me. This really should have been a trigger warning. I know it’s not real but I was so immersed I could practically see them doing it in front of me 😬

I can’t imagine finishing this book and having to wait another YEAR for the next one. We were finally introduced to the “pretty” world, new love interest with better chemistry, fun adventures, amazing relevant themes and wonderful plot twists. I wanna say more but I’m scared I’ll spoil it for you guys 😭😭

But I can say this: Tally’s growth and strength is honestly admirable. It’s not far fetched, she’s just a teenager after all, but I’m sure we could all learn a thing or two from her bravery and willingness to learn from her mistakes and grow. Just read it, so far it’s my favorite book in the series! A pure dystopian masterpiece 🤌🏽✨

Oh and hey Scott-la, really quick question, what chapter does Maddy die?? Her character is like totally bogus and utterly angry-making 🙄

What’re your thoughts on pretty privilege?

This book explores the concept of pretty privilege and what people are willing to do to be considered “pretty” and fit in. It tackles sacrifices, betrayal, self worth and self discovery in a creative dystopian setting!

The plot was well paced and the world building was really intriguing. The characters were a bit flat but a lot more relatable and loyal compared to the movie, Peris for example was so vain in the movie but so found family coded in the book and even after the fmc (Tally) betrayed her friends they were still there for her. There’s this scene in the book with shoes (yes shoes!) that really should have made it in the movies, like what were they thinking?! It tugged at my heart and seriously almost made me cry. But after the movie ending I immediately bought the whole series to find out what happened next!

I just wish the romantic leads had chemistry. There was a dramatic love triangle but it all just felt unnecessary because they didn’t even have chemistry. And this is why men written by women are far superior, men just don’t know how to do it right 😂

@thesierrasimone may have just become an auto-buy author for me! This book has everything you’d expect in a dark romance and yet so much more as well.

The storyline is really well planned out, their past, present and future flows seamlessly, it’s captivating and gut wrenching at the same time. The characters are well developed and can easily be empathized with, even the villain! The dynamic between the main characters is hot and spicy, as expected, but she fell first and he fell harder. The cherry on top is that he’s an open yearner and willing to get on his literal knees for her – literally all I want for Christmas guys, I’m just a girl 🧎🏾‍♀️🫴🏽😭

Simone has a really good way with words as well, I was completely immersed in the book which elevated my experience. Reading Priest was cathartic in a way, all the raw emotion on religion, love, betrayal and sacrifices was genuinely refreshing. I’m really looking forward to reading the rest of the series!

what’s a book you haven’t moved on from yet?

i read this masterpiece almost a year ago and i still tear up every time i think of it 🥺😖 the writing is so beautiful and their story is so tragic. if you haven’t read it yet please don’t deprive yourself of this work of art!

i’ve had such a fun and interesting adventure with this series! the plot is really well developed, there’s always something happening and it’s just so intriguing. it’s not really heavy on found family and it was hard to connect with the characters which was dissapointing but the overall message is deep and creatively portrayed in a dystopian setting, a solid 4 star series. i’d recommend it to sci-fi and dystopian lovers, it’s most definitely worth the read.
