Had it not been for a @historycoolkids post back in April, I might have still been unaware of the Nome serum run and the heroism of Togo, Balto, and many other sled dogs. After reading that post, I was intrigued and thought: “there must be a book about this.” And there was!
“The Cruelest Miles” (published in 2003) relies on many primary sources to share a very detailed story of the diphtheria outbreak, subsequent need for serum/antitoxin, and the erotic efforts undertaken during a particularly terrible winter storm in western Alaska. They also offer history of the Native people across the now-state, including the necessity of dogs and other animals for survival. I’m a slow reader, and started with a hardback @kingcountylibrary copy, then eventually had to return it and finish with this paperback. Reading this also coincided with discovering the @denali_pupper webcam and now I must make a visit to Alaska - for dog-related reasons 😍 by @referencefox
