Our pond water filtration experiment with Keith from @edibly.wild this week was a great opportunity for our Starseeds to learn another survival skill!

We got hands-on to naturally clean the water, reducing dirt, cloudiness and unpleasant smells using layers of cloth, rocks, sand, charcoal and cattails.

The final step in removing harmful bacteria would be to boil the water, use uv light or iodine before drinking.

Today at @brookstoneacademy we had our own version of Nuit Blanche! 🎨

We started the day by talking about the origin of Nuit Blanche and how it’s been happening every October in Toronto for 20 years. We watched a news clip from this year’s festival. We read Ish by @peterhreynolds and Beautiful Oops by @barneysaltzberg. We discussed why it’s important to go into the day with an open mind, ready to explore and have an uplifting attitude about ourselves and others. 📚

We had 5 different activity stations and broke up into small groups. We did still life drawing (as suggested by a student whose parent gave us floral arrangements), clay sculpture exploration, 2D painting and drawing studio, tie dye prep, and apple sauce making! 🧑‍🎨🍎👩‍🎨🍏👨‍🎨

All the students tried their best, had a fantastic attitude and loved our version of Nuit Blanche. 🥳

Thank you @brookstoneacademy for allowing me to take over the school day with art! Seeing how creative our community is energizing. ✨🥰✨

Perfect for homeschoolers ages 8–14 who love hands-on learning, farm animals, and discovering where everyday products come from!

🌿 THREE WEDNESDAYS — THREE UNIQUE EXPERIENCES!

🧼 October 21 – Goat Milk & Soap Making

🐄 October 28 – Farmstead Dairy: Milking, Butter & Cheese Making

Each day is filled with practical learning, hands-on activities, and opportunities to connect with our friendly farm animals!

Do you know that feeling in your stomach where your decision doesn’t feel right? Even though it seems great on paper, you can’t make a definite choice because you know there has to be more out there.

It is a feeling I know all too well and I know you do too.

Making a change, or deciding to go against the typical route for education can feel daunting. Especially when there are family or friends questioning why you’d even explore alternative options.

You know your child best. You always will, and the gut feeling you have to make the move is there for a reason. You know that there is a better option for them.

Children are supposed to feel JOY in where they spend their days. There will be moments of hardship but that shouldn’t be every day, all year long.

Relationships are at the core of our program because we know children thrive when they are valued and supported for who they are.

Our parents are also supported by being welcomed into our classroom spaces, invited to our field trips, and our community mornings. We host parent wellness workshops too because when a parent has the tools they need, their children can feel that their adults can hold onto whatever they’re experiencing.

I think one of the biggest things we can understand about our children’s behaviour is what’s actually happening in their brains when emotions get really big.

We can be asking them to listen, think, make better choices or understand what they did wrong, without realizing that those are the very skills they might be struggling to access in that moment.

And when we understand that, it gives us an opportunity to approach those moments differently. To recognize when our children need support moving through the emotion before we try to teach them something.
