What happens when someone who has spent his life rescuing people faces something he can’t rescue his own mum from?

On October 14, Bondi Rescue lifeguard Andrew “Reidy” Reid joins The Dementia Collective for a deeply personal conversation about his mum Trish and her journey with Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia.

Reidy opens up about what it feels like to mourn someone who is still here, the difficulty of visiting his mum in long-term care, missing the conversations they once had, and the complicated reality of loving someone through dementia.

We also talk about his life on Bondi Beach, more than 50 marathons, Ironman, his world record marathon carrying a surfboard, and how endurance sport has become one of the ways he copes when life gets hard.

This is a side of Reidy you probably haven’t seen on Bondi Rescue.

Once upon a time on a coast that was golden … ➡️

There were two over 40 in-vah-lids who thought they could take on @swimrun_australia

They swum the seas and scrambled over rocks …

Never letting a bit of pain get in the way of the great barriers (🤓) on display …

Or the muffin top that loved to pop! …

Sometimes the beach had the final say …

And the boys wanted to call it a day …

But they knew if they didn’t stop …

Then the next father who finds himself …

Crinkle cut and hairless …

Or old and outdated …

Would never turn up in a sports bra and togs to receive a podium finish @swimrun_australia in the duo enduro division🥇
