In 2018, I became a published author.

At the time, I was raising four children, working as a substitute teacher, managing a busy household, soccer/cross country/band mom, and navigating all the beautiful chaos that comes with family life.

Somewhere between school schedules, meals, laundry, and caring for everyone else, I made space for something that belonged to me. I wrote a book.

Looking back, I’m proud of the woman who found the time, energy, and determination to put her words into the world.

After publishing my book, I began my studies in mindfulness and meditation, opening another chapter of learning, self-discovery, and personal growth.

Eight years later, I see how those experiences were connected. Writing helped me find my voice. Mindfulness taught me to listen to it.

And now, at 60, I’m still writing, still learning, still becoming.

Some accomplishments deserve to be celebrated twice—once when they happen and again when we recognize everything it took to make them happen.

For my friends craving Michigan’s color change—it was breathtaking!

A busy weekend with a beautiful view.

Growing up we had a photo of fall leaves over a lake that was illuminated from behind—I loved that, no idea of what became of it! This weekend reminded me of those childhood memories. Very sweet.

I was born in a town just outside of Detroit—as a kid we went to the DIA (you gotta have art 🎶) and the science museum—later trips to Windsor to listen to jazz in dive bars. Betting on the ponies at Hazel Park when money was tight—the ponies never let me down!! Finally taking my kids to the Detroit Zoo. The Detroit area has a very special place in my heart.

When @zingermansroadhouse offered a class with Detroit Pizza, I took it! I’ve been making it on repeat ever since! Because EVERYONE loves it!

The sauce recipe is easy, 3 tablespoons of sugar, some garlic, I do use onion sometimes, tomato puree, and spices. It is amazing!

On my 14 day trip, my past experiences kept resurfacing in crazy ways—this is one of them.

Seeing a sign in Reno Nevada outside of an extremely over priced coop with NO bathrooms—a street I lived on with the city I lived in.

I had to take a photo of this synchronicity. I had to document this for myself!

This summer I started making sungold tomato pasta sauce—roast everything 30-45 minutes at 400° then zoom it up. Could NOT be easier.

I LOVE Sally’s baking blog!!❤️❤️ these cookies were an absolute hit with the fam. I have some in the freezer to share with college kids! Spoiler alert for one of you!

I added maple chips in with the chocolate for a fall vibe.

I’m so glad that I made the brown butter for these cookies—it makes a big difference and offers a depth of flavor.

These cookies will be in the rotation!

Whipped brown butter for the cookies—the aroma was seriously intoxicating! Or I may have just forgotten to eat breakfast and was starving! 🫪

I whipped the brown butter slow for a full minute and then turned up the speed to the max. Just an old hand mixer. Nothing fancy.

I’m now thinking of all the ways I can use brown butter! I’m sure I can make it ahead!

In my restaurant days I made a walnut butter sauce over pasta—I’m thinking I should revamp that recipe!

How to make brown butter—it takes patience.

I wanted to make maple chip brown butter cookies—I thought I’d share the first step, browning butter.

The process takes longer than you might think—if you have never done this before I suggest a pan with a white bottom—easier to see the butter change grime yellow to an orange. It’s also easier to see the flecks.

Don’t worry about burning the butter, if you are stiring and paying attention that won’t happen. If you think your butter is too brown, let it cool then taste it. Trust the process.

FYI: Brown butter can be made ahead of time.
