🌟MEET THE COLLABORATORS🌟

Last but certainly not least, we are happy to introduce the creative mind behind the scenic design for Moving Roots/Ancestry Wings, Orren Grace Fen!

Orren Grace Fen is a south Minneapolis born Puppeteer, Designer, Director and Performer. Orren has been in love with puppets for almost 19 years, and is deeply embedded in the many community puppet rituals that Minneapolis holds so dearly.
She has worked with Barebones Puppets, Heart of the Beast Theatre, Bread and Puppet Theater, Open Eye Theater, zAmya Theater Project and Open Flame Theatre. Orren attributes her work to her many mentors including Harry Waters Jr, Sandy Spieler, Mark Safford, Katie Burgess, Steve Ackerman as well as the sacredness of growing up in such a beloved community. Most recently Orren directed and created “BUG BALLET” which was met with much buzz, selling out the entire two weekend run at the Southern Theater. Orren was also the Co-Director of the 2026 May Day Tree of Life Ceremony with Sofia Padilla. Up next you can see Orren perform in “Out Here Out Loud” a Queer Voices Cabaret June 26th-27th at Red Eye Theater. Or on tour across the country with Bread and Puppet Theater this fall.

“We people of Mnisota Makoce know well the wild expanse between the season of darkness and the season of light. How, after a winter so soaked in grief, do we step forward, joyfully, to greet the Spring. In all corners of this weary world, people wake from the night of despair and set themselves to the work of liberation and peace.
By their example, strengthened by their love, we celebrate the returning of the sun.
Our work is not finished.
We see the day beyond empire, when our descendents sit together at the table of abundance and peace. Today, and every day, we step forward into that future.
We pray for liberation. We pray for Spring”.

“We remember Renee and Alex, we remember all the victims from state violence and gun violence, members of this beloved community whose lives were taken, whose absence has left a void in their families and our communities that is impossible to fill.
In their memory today, we leave room for wonder, we continue to resist and we dance in their honor”.

“Recordamos a Renee y Alex, recordamos a todas las víctimas de la violencia estatal y la violencia armada, miembros de esta querida comunidad cuyas vidas fueron arrebatadas, cuya ausencia ha dejado un hueco en sus familias y en nuestras comunidades que es imposible de llenar.
En su memoria hoy, dejamos espacio para la maravilla, seguimos resistiendo y bailamos en su honor”.

This May I had the honor of Co-directing the 52nd annual May Day Tree of Life Ceremony with Sofia Padilla.

In one scene of the ceremony I had the honor of dancing with Eliana @partly_cloud_e

We danced to Bella Ciao dressed as birds in honor of Renee and Alex.

Our ritual built, starting small, allowing room for wonder and building as we flew through the space together, and up through the hills covered with our beloved community, leaving the park.
During dress rehearsal as we were dancing two small birds flew across the stage, far above us, and for a brief moment duetted and danced above us, as we danced.

This scene reminded me how puppets can hold our grief, the simplest images can hold the most power, and disarm our minds, allowing there to be prayer, heartbreak.

These Bird puppets were made by Sandy Spieler and Alison Duttle in 2003 for the May Day Ceremony that year, honoring a young girl who was lost to gun violence on Chicago Ave.
These puppets have traveled to Korea and have been used in many grief rituals.

it was truly an honor to hold them.

I don’t usually post little projects like this one,

But I made this paper house lamp for a special little one who’s new to this world.

So blessed for it to have a home on their shelf, and for this baby to be welcomed so beautifully into our community

Thanks Dio for instigating this project

Made with colorful tissue paper, glue, wire coat hangers using techniques I learned from Tara Fahey and Andrew Kim @thingumatheatre by @repent.for.your.sequins

I’m so honored to be Co-Directing the 52nd? Annual May Day Tree of Life Ceremony with Sofia Padilla @sofipadmx

The Ceremony is being created by a cohort of artists, along with community members.
As always the Ceremony will be in Powderhorn Park on the first Sunday in May after the parade

We have a few more public builds
