Statement from Former Congresswoman & Administrator Erica Lee Carter:

It is with my deepest sympathy that I learned of the passing of former State Representative Garnet Coleman, who proudly represented the community where I live and have called home for many, many years.

I will continue to keep his family, his constituents, and the many friends and colleagues he made throughout his years of service in my prayers.
Garnet Coleman leaves behind a tremendous legacy as a magnificent legislator and public servant. His impact on our community and the State of Texas will not be forgotten. by @repjacksonlee

It was an honor to represent the people of Harris County and the Harris County Commissioners Court in my role as County Administrator as we hosted the congressional oversight hearing on the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. It was also a privilege, as a former Member of Congress, to welcome my congressional colleagues to Harris County as they sought answers, accountability, and transparency for Mr. Salgado Araujo, his family, and our community. 📸 @hcprecinct4 taken in Harris County Commissioners Court by @repjacksonlee

Congratulations to my friend, Congressman Christian Menefee. It was truly an honor to serve as your campaign chair as you won the primary to represent Texas’s 18th Congressional District for years to come.

Thank you for all that you do and for continuing the powerful legacy of leaders such as Barbara Jordan, Mickey Leland, Craig Washington, Sheila Jackson Lee, and Sylvester Turner. I know you will continue to fight for and faithfully represent the people of the 18th Congressional District of Texas with strength, integrity, and compassion.

As a former Member of Congress who proudly represented this historic district, it is my honor to recognize and celebrate you, my brother. Wishing you continued success and God’s blessings as you move forward in service to the people. taken in Texas's 18th Congressional District by @repjacksonlee

Today was a day to celebrate the remarkable life and service of my mother, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, and her dedication to this country.

I want to thank the members of Council, including Martha Castex-Tatum, Edward Pollard, Tiffany Thomas, and the many others who joined us to celebrate the naming of the newly built international Terminal E now the “Sheila Jackson Lee Terminal E.”

As I celebrated today with family and friends, I know my mother is smiling down, knowing that people will continue the work, the fight, and the ambition to serve others each and every day in honor of her legacy.
Thank you to everyone who was able to join us today.

And as she always ended every speech:

Today is a day to celebrate Mother’s Day, and this is now the second Mother’s Day I have celebrated without my mother. Even so, I continue to cherish and celebrate her legacy, her spirit, and all the love and kindness she gave to others.

Mommy, I love you. Sheila Jackson Lee, you were truly the people’s champion, and I miss you deeply. But I could not let this day pass without saying Happy Mother’s Day to you. You have always been such a blessing to me, and I thank you for all that you have done for me and my brother. Your love, strength, and care will always stay with us.

Happy Mother’s Day, Mommy. ❤️ by @repjacksonlee

Today marks one year since we lost the late Honorable Congressman and Houston’s former mayor, Sylvester Turner. 🕊️

It was truly an honor to pass the baton to him, and I know he and my mother are smiling down, knowing that the 18th Congressional District is in good hands with our Congressman, Christian Menefee.

We will continue to carry the legacy forward. Mayor Turner, thank you for all you did for Houstonians and for the 18th Congressional District. Your leadership, your voice, and your love for the community continue to inspire us every day. 🤍

Your legacy lives on. taken in Texas's 18th Congressional District by @repjacksonlee

Yesterday, I was honored to speak at the prayer vigil in tribute to the late Reverend Jesse Jackson, a true freedom fighter whose legacy continues to inspire generations. He was a dear friend to my mother, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, and their shared commitment to justice and equality left a lasting impact on so many lives.

As we reflect on his life and service, we are reminded of his constant message to keep hope alive. It is now our responsibility to carry that hope forward and continue the work of building a more just and equitable society. taken in Harris County by @repjacksonlee

I’m deeply grateful for the support I’ve received as I’ve been unanimously appointed by the Harris County Commissioners Court to serve as Harris County Administrator. This role is both an honor and a responsibility, as I will work to ensure effective services for our community, manage county operations, and collaborate closely with every commissioner to meet the needs of Harris County residents.

Starting March 9, 2026, I am committed to serving with dedication and integrity, and I look forward to working together to make Harris County an even better place for all. taken in Harris County by @repjacksonlee
