Calicut Paragon in Dubai, never ceases to amaze. My focus usually is the fish, meat and appams. This time however, the tender coconut pudding stole my heart, tummy et all.

The sweetness just right, nicely wobbly and the bit of tender coconut ‘shaash’ or inner skin, in my mouth.

I am prone to thinking about things nobody really needs to think about.

For this, I blame one man entirely: Mr Wodehouse.

The addiction began early. I read his books, then looked around at ordinary life and began wondering: what if? What if that aunt had a secret agenda? What if the man at the next table was about to become engaged to the wrong person? What if the neighbour’s dog knew rather more than was strictly necessary?

In my early years, this made me the unnecessary gossip, furnishing perfectly innocent events with motive, subplot and a cast of supporting characters. Later, when civilisation finally seeped into me, I stopped circulating these elaborate findings and began mapping them on paper instead.

I am almost certain that the ‘para series’ streaming out of my eyes, ears and nose some forty years hence will be directly attributable to this early exposure, and to the profound effect those books had on an otherwise perfectly manageable mind.

I have been fascinated with arches and their use in Dubai. So my photo dump here has quite a few.

1. Dubai mall - a section where the atmosphere turns distinctly local.

2. Al Serkal - one of my favourite places in Dubai, where former warehouses have been turned into an art district. Pretty shops, cafes, cinemas, exhibitions.

3. A view from my window, Jumeirah beach at a distance.

4. The arched doorway at one of my favourite cafes, Kaak Al Manara.

5. A glimpse through the glass at Burj Khalifa/ Dubai Mall metro, a view of the beautiful sculpture - local man and woman in black and white. Stark. Look for it!

6-12 glimpses of Emirates golf course at night.

Kaak or the purse shaped bread is a favourite in the Levant. There is a debate around which one, the savoury or the sweet.

A crisp outside and a soft inside. But what excited me most is how it is sold. On poles and cycles by ‘fresh air vendors’.

Today my day job in marketing, takes me to a kitchen. I learn the fine art of biryani making with master khansamas, in what is perhaps Calcutta’s best.

I ate with my eyes! What I was meant to capture was marketing material. Fringe benefits!

The Victoria and Albert Museum in London preserves beautifully. It has recently opened V&A East Storehouse near Stratford, where the collection once kept in reserve is now on display, a storehouse of curation that will stun you with how well delicate objects are preserved.

I opened my mother’s Godrej almirah after her passing. Her dress sense was well known: she had been a student of art college and NID.

Inside, I found an entire collection of artist and artisanal creations. Things I had hitherto taken for granted turned out to be heritage pieces.

I had met Darshan the founder of Weaver’s Studio, at a London show on sarees. I was wearing a Batik created by Jamuna Sen, Nandalal Bose’s daughter, and that is how our friendship began.

I popped into Weaver’s yesterday, taking some of my mother’s sarees to be photographed for an upcoming exhibition in Shantiniketan. That is when Darshan showed me the collection she has painstakingly gathered and documented: 150 year old Balucharis, old Javanese Batiks, muslin so fine you had only ever read about it in history books.

To me, it was another corner of Calcutta discovered, the people who painstakingly maintain heritage. The batiks stood out. Weaver’s studio is more of a museum of curation.

Bengal’s textile heritage preserved.
