Calcutta cravings in Watford Junction!

A totally surreal experience tasting beloved snacks, savoury main course stalwarts and Bengali mishti or sweets in Hertfordshire! There are many menu items you won’t find in a UK Indian restaurant here and her Kolkata Biryani is the best I’ve had in the UK so far.

Sharmistha Paul, founder of @calcuttacrravingsuk and catering company @sharmiskkitchenuk has the most remarkable story too.

A north Calcutta girl from Bagbazar, she was a banker before finding herself in Cornwall with her husband. She started catering for the school mums and teachers before being supported by the farmers market association to run stalls.

She continued when they moved to London, and has now opened a simple cafe with her top sellers alongside her successful catering business. She’s just received two outstanding achievement awards at the @britishcurryawards.

I can tell you we loved the food, which is a specific mix of Anglo Indian, Bengali and Mughlai treats popular in cafes and cabins of Kolkata. it nearly made us weep.

Sharmi is a serious talent even making her own Bengali sweet shop and dessert delicacies. Malpua for instance is something our elders made for special occasions! And I used to eat a kilo of kheer kadam in a sitting as I’ve said on @bbcradio4 The Kitchen Cabinet.

Sharmi has been following me for years, which was all very sweet, and I gave her some tough talking business advice. Unfortunately in today’s world you have to take control of your storytelling and social media, which can often trump true talent.

She’s now on it. But meanwhile, we should do what we can to support hospitality entrepreneurs with incredible talent who are doing exciting and interesting things.

If you’re not in Hertfordshire, Watford junction is a mere 15 minutes from London Euston. Hope you can try her wares soon. Thank you @reshomm for the invite. I’ll be back as a paying punter urgently!

That time of the year I can be found clutching 5m of silk handloom for dear life in case it slips off in front of a demon-slaying goddess among the best of London’s Bengali Society.

I’m not religious but I totally get behind Durga Puja. What’s not to love about a goddess created especially to slay a vile demon no man could?

A symbol of strength, celebration of good over evil and plenty of community camaraderie makes it an annual calendar event worth making the trip in finery on the London Underground for.

This year my bundles couldn’t and didn’t any to make it. I have prayed for common sense and wisdom to return to them prayed. But it was so cute to see young ones perform dance, music and more in a cultural show. A certain someone (cough: my niece) was enthralled and I hope, inspired to have a go.

Wonderful to hang with my lovely friends and family, as well as meet many talented members of the food writing and hospitality world. The home made vegetable chop by @reshomm was excellent. And we packed chicken cutlet, kati rolls to go.

I didn’t stay for Bhog, the blessed post prayer meal, but it might be cooking in my kitchen for the kids and me later.

Well done to @londondurgapuja for bringing us all together again and if you’re celebrating, Shubho Pujo!
