POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
We all put our shoes on the same way...⁣
⁣
Like with sports, it's easy for patients to forget Doctors are just people too.⁣
⁣
Though they are incredibly smart and gifted and often play the role of God in our lives, interventional pain Drs have a hard job too. And it's just one piece of the treatment puzzle with chronic pain, albeit probably the most important one to navigate correctly.⁣
⁣
Yet understanding the landscape of treatment options and algorithms doctors use to recommend treatments is typically a process patients are not privy too - which always felt odd to me when we're the ones living with the decision.⁣
⁣
▶️ Illnesses, pain and people are complex. What's right for you is not right for someone else in the seemingly same situation. You have to be able to ask the right questions and think critically. And the patients who attended this conference are now much better equipped.⁣
⁣
Somehow, this EmpowerYou conference left me even more inspired than I came into it.⁣
⁣
In my work with CRPS patients, I see time and time again how the system has failed us. That's unfortunately the point at which patients usually end up in my hands...After years of medical trauma and poor relationships with providers, thinking they had no other options.⁣
⁣
There is then so much damage to undo and opportunities lost that cannot necessarily be recovered. ⁣
⁣
Because though the bulk of the responsibility for our healing lies on our shoulders, fair or not, the truth is we NEED medical professionals when dealing with one of the most challenging, insidious, progressive diseases that exist.⁣
⁣
➡️ We cannot do this alone. We need better awareness, education, and access.⁣
⁣
And it's one thing for me to foster this with every individual who crosses my path. It's another when the folks holding the needles/scalpels are on the same mission.⁣

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is called that for a reason.⁣ 👇⁣
⁣
◾It’s complex.⁣
◾It affects a region(s) of the body.⁣
◾It’s symptoms are extremely painful.⁣
◾It’s a syndrome i.e. a collection of symptoms which consistently occur together.⁣
⁣
What are those common, excruciating and often invisible symptoms?⁣ ⬅️ Swipe to learn about some of the main ways CRPS impacts people.⁣
⁣
▶️ The hardest thing about diagnosing CRPS, is not even how many different symptoms there are, but how they are largely invisible especially later in the disease course, dynamic in nature, and each could individually be from many different illnesses.⁣
⁣
It being a disease of exclusion, meaning you typically only get the diagnosis after everything else plausible is eliminated, also costs patients valuable time in treatments being as effective as possible.⁣
⁣
If the physician is not familiar with CRPS as a whole, it’s essentially impossible to diagnose. And unfortunately, the awareness of CRPS is far too low in the medical community overall.⁣
⁣
➡️ Recognizing these symptoms (which often overlap with central sensitization as pain goes on longer unadressed) is crucial.⁣
⁣
🙏 Please share this post with your community so more folks are aware of how this disease manifests and why, so they can get more effective treatments sooner.⁣ 🧡
⁣
🏋️ If you are a complex patient who wants more tools to improve your symptoms through movement and has not found the answers or support they need in traditional settings, it does not mean you can't improve.

‘You haven’t vanished. You’re not gone. Don’t panic. When you’ve done it this long, and you’ve seen magic, and you know it won’t kill you, even when the whole world doubts it. This is your moment, they can’t take your talent, they can’t take your stripes, they can’t erase your hours.’⁣
⁣
➡️ It may not look like it now but I’ve been where you’re at. And it’s a part of me forever no matter what I can achieve now with and despite CRPS.⁣
⁣
Large swatches of my life are gone. But they made me who I am today. I put in the hours. And I learned so much because of that suffering.⁣
⁣
These photos are from before I developed the most painful condition known to man, during years of medications and treatments fighting my way back after a brain injury.⁣
⁣
I am best at working with chronic CRPS patients who's sleep schedules have become completely jumbled because that’s my story too. Chronic sleep debt.⁣
⁣
The folks who have been told by their doctors, "I don't know how else to help you" because they've tried 'everything'. Because I’ve been that person too. 🙋‍♀️⁣
⁣
Unfortunately I hear this experience from #CRPS patients far too often, and I hate it. Because there are actually things that could help, instead of being put on script after script, desperately reaching outside ourselves for relief. It’s the most painful place to be as a human.⁣
⁣
👉 I intentionally work with this group because I know I have so much to offer that will help improve your energy and recovery. Our diseases are understandably so overwhelming that we don't know where to start undoing that tangled ball of yarn. And the longer we live like that the harder it gets, especially largely alone and isolated.⁣
⁣
Most coaches don't love working with the most challenging or long-term cases. They think they're over dramatic or difficult.
⁣
I actually prefer this patient. Because I see you, and I know how much you're still worth and how much potential you still have.⁣
⁣
You have a 100% survival rate until now too. You are strong AF. But we can do more than survive. We can thrive, and I can show you how.⁣

One of the biggest barriers to movement with chronic pain is knowing how to adjust in different ways. Things like 👇

◾ The position of the load to control range of motion or stress on a joint.
◾ Working within angles and positions you own and don't force you to compensate and increase spasming when you're more limited.
◾ Adjusting the type of movement or dose-response when working your way back from a more de-conditioned period.
◾ Tweaking tempo/time under tension depending on your nervous system capacity or symptoms like fatigue.
◾ Changing the sensory input to account for dynamic neuropathy that affects how much or how little you feel.
◾ Biasing an area of the body and influencing the overall toll/spread of a workout when flaring.

The problem, is even this knowledge is hard to have as a patient, and it's where most of us start trying to make movement work for us - which inadvertently becomes it's own issue because it's like looking at the decorations on a house before checking the foundation.

➡️ Movement then becomes a huge uphill battle and even harder to 'do right' if some the underlying variables that affect how challenging these issues are and the margin for error we have, are not addressed first.

💻 To learn where to start, and exactly how to do it, register for the Movement with Complex Pain Masterclass. Taught by myself, hosted by @crps_elamaa + @kompleksinen.kaksikko Foundation.

Shout out to your "good" side! "Overworked and underpaid" - @theneurostudio

What do I mean by this? 👇️

When one area hurts, the rest of your body sneakily picks up the slack. Our weight shift changes. We jut a hip out or lock a knee out so one hip can take more weight. The other arm and side of our torso does all the lifting. Our back works overtime to protect our deep spine.

➡️ And the challenge is that those muscles don’t have, or aren't necessarily designed to have the endurance, motor control or stability to be doing so, as more is constantly being asked of them. Over time, that sides brain map ends up even muddier and more confused than the weak side because it’s literally doing everything.

The "good" side starts really hurting in different ways too, and it feels like everything is falling apart. It's not random. And it isn't because you're weak in the way people usually mean.

🧠 Weakness with complex pain is rarely just about muscle. Pain itself can switch muscles off (we call that neuromuscular inhibition). Nerves conduction can be slower. Sensations dulled. The brain's picture of an area gets fuzzy and it uses the muscles and strategies it has to to survive. And your body is very reluctant to trust a part it can't clearly feel and doesn’t feel safe using.

🏋️‍♀️ So just loading it more is not the answer. That often just re-engrains the compensations further. The answer is giving your brain better sensory information first so it can make different automatic decisions when it comes to movement patterns and create the stability it needs to engage parts it's learned to work around.

💻️ To get strategies that actually change this, register for the Movement with Complex Pain Masterclass with @crps_elamaa + @kompleksinen.kaksikko.

Bendy folks, this one's for you. 🙋‍♀️ (Speaking as a fellow bendy human.)

If you have hypermobility (hEDS or HSD) and you constantly feel stiff, tight and achy, the instinct is to stretch it out. Foam roll it. Get it massaged. Go to the chiro. Repeat. Over and over...

And it helps give short term relief, but it won’t change the reason your body is doing that to begin with. Here's something to think about. 👇️

➡️ That sensation of stiffness might not be actual tightness at all. Very often it's your body creating stability it doesn't feel it has. Your muscles grip because your joints don't feel secure and your brain isn't getting clear information about where you are.

Feeling stiff is information. Your body asking for something else. So when we keep just releasing and stretching, not only do we we take away the one strategy your body has to use, but we aren’t giving it is actually begging for. So it’s no wonder it grips right back.

🧠 What helps long-term is better sensory information so your brain can actually connect to those muscles again that it’s learned to work around, and waking up the deep stabilizers that tend to switch off as neuromuscular inhibition in areas becomes more pronounced and long-term.

Releases aren't bad. I use them all the time! They just are just one side of the equation. And for bendy bodies or those of use with neurological conditions, if it’s all we rely on it can actually make the problem worse over time.

👉️ Want to learn where to start giving your brain more sensory input so it doesn't have to use the strategies it has learned to survive that are keeping you stuck in this cycle?

💻 We'll dig into this in the Movement with Complex Pain Masterclass with @crps_elamaa + @kompleksinen.kaksikko

One of the biggest mistakes I see pain patients making around movement is not managing their body before or after exercise itself.⁣
⁣
What should a proper warm-up include?⁣ 👇

With complex pain or nervous system dysfunction, you really have to have ways to bridge that gap from rest to nervous system excitation, and nervous system excitation back to rest again, so your body doesn’t freak out when you engage in what it will otherwise initially perceive as threat.⁣
⁣
➡️ My favorite simple bucket of techniques to deal with this are breathing and self administered release techniques. Checking those boxes helps better prep your brain and tissues for the exposure of a workout, or recovering from one.
⁣
▶️ That's a great place to start.⁣ Over time, you want to learn how to incorporate more strategies that address your bodies specific limitations like:
⁣
◾Mobilizing local joints⁣ that may be more limited in range of motion⁣, which what desensitizes them.
◾ Improving the sensory input so you can activate under-active muscles that actually allow shortened, tight ones to lengthen⁣.
◾Integrating the affected limb(s) into more full body movement patterns before loading with more resistance.
⁣
This will address supporting the most challenging aspects of the workout, and your biggest compensations BEFORE you put yourself in more intense situations.⁣
⁣
🏋️ Going straight into exercise without a warm-up or fatiguing yourself too much with it, makes it even more of an uphill battle.

If you are dealing with sensitivity to touch, check out my last post explaining what allodynia is clinically, and what experiencing it personally was like.

With allodynia, sometimes even before anything touches you, you can feel that uptick. You tense up, hold your breath, feel the skin tingling more or heart rate increasing because your nervous system knows what’s coming...

That's not anxiety or catastrophizing. You have learned this hurts, so you start automatically rightfully so predicting the response. This is the first variable that is modifiable and it matters because even that turns the alarm up driving the sympathetic response.

Part of what we want to improve isn't just the literal tolerance to touch, but the anticipation of it and changing that automatic response in a way that is rooted in realistic optimism gained from different learned experiences so you can guard less.

▶️ Flip through this carousel for strategies on where to start improving this response to sensory inputs that applies to touch, texture, temperature etc.

As I desensitized my CRPS areas and progressed that stimulus through increasingly challenging input, bridging the gap into movement with the appropriate increasing dose response, my brain started to let go of this bizarre default baseline feeling more and more.⁣

Now, over 7 years into my CRPS journey, I can wear leggings without wanting to rip them off my calf, walk in the ocean, on different textures on the ground barefoot, and even do pedicures (which you know, are extremely triggering).

👉️ In the Movement with Complex Pain Masterclass, I'll teach you how to do ‘desensitization’ and ‘exposure’ correctly, working with you brain and gently flirting with that line rather than pushing through pain.

If you live with allodynia, you know what it’s like for literally everything to be extremely painful.

What does this weird word actually mean? 👇️

🔥 Allodynia is essentially extreme sensitivity to touch or pressure, and typically comes with sensitivity to other sensory inputs. Gentle, benign things like textures and temperatures you never thought twice about are now incredibly aggravating.⁣

🧠 It is not in your head, and actually not even a disproportionate response to a normal signal; your brain is actually getting an incredibly loud disproportionate signal to begin with, and responding appropriately given that.

To add to the frustration, this symptom is typically not even visible despite not obvious examples like the water from a warm shower causing skin to redden, veins bulge and limb to swell (which is technically the common additional sympathetic response).

Early on in my CRPS journey, I didn’t know how else to explain it other than everything that touches my leg feels intolerable and my leg feels like it's an aliens⁣'

😫 Once soft bedsheets felt rough. Sweats that used to feel velvety were so scratchy. Socks were constricting. Shoes felt claustrophobic. The breeze hitting my leg wrong, too long in the sun, water temperature, textures on the ground - everything became obnoxious at best and excruciating at worst.

For a long time I could wear nothing tight. I literally cut off my leggings on my left leg at my knee. I would wear compression short term to control swelling when in the gym or as a layer during icing, but they had to be just the right fabric, constriction level and stitching for the shortest amount of time possible.⁣

👉️ Do you deal with this intrusive symptom?

💻 If so, be sure to check out The Movement with Complex Pain (MWCP) Masterclass. Link in bio! 🔗

In my next post, I will give some tips on where to begin decreasing allodynia which is crucial to do before layering in more movement, since it affects not only our nervous system's response, but how we recruit the muscles in the areas it affects the sensations of. by @resilientwarriorcoaching

You're not failing to get better. You might just be practicing the wrong things.

This took me way too long to understand and find ways to truly improve.

🧠 Your nervous system learns from whatever you repeat. That's neuroplasticity, and we usually talk about it like it's all positive. But the other side of it is called competitive plasticity.

Guarding is learned too. So is limping, clenching, holding your breath, hiking a hip, bracing before every step. Whatever your body has learned to do to create safety and stability. Repeat those enough and your body gets really, really good at them.

So when you push through a walk with your whole body braced and your pain at an 8, you aren't just getting your steps in. You are inadvertently engraining the exact pattern that keeps you stuck in pain.

This is not your fault. Our brains are too smart. Compensating is its job. It's your body protecting you with the tools it has.

➡️ If we want a different result, we have to give your brain a different option to practice. Different input. Less threat. Better information about where you are in space. Then movement you can repeat without bracing through it so you can actually replace the old automatic strategy.

That's the heart of this masterclass. We're not pushing through pain. We're changing what your brain is learning.
