Mike Beigel meant a lot to me and losing him has been really tough. I am so grateful for the time we had together. Working with Mike on the Resynator project starting when I was 25 was the first time in my life I’d connected to my dad, and so being around Mike made me feel close to him. I spent the first few years earning his trust...and I really had to earn it! He didn’t let many people in. But from that point on we were a team and he became my family, and I, a part of his. We couldn’t have been more different as people. He was an actual genius, with his brain always going from one thought to the next and especially in the early days I was so overwhelmed. There is a photo in this carousel of two side by side shots that are almost 10 years apart (2014-2023). I learned so much in that time from him. We spent days and days in his lab for over a decade together. @bkehew2000 and @mattmusty would come down with me, always ordering Leucadia Pizza and always leaving with something of my dad’s that we found like a Resynator demo tape, or a bunch of slides from early NAMM shows. We spent NAMM shows together, I archived his work and helped him move out of his home with his daughter @romy_bagel, and @flytetymejam and I got to present a Recording Academy Cert. of Recognition to him at my LA Premiere for his innovative work and impact on music. And recently, thanks to @forgottenfuturesmusic, we were working on resurrecting more of his unique and exciting early inventions. Mike could be so frustrating and you had to be so patient with him. But it was always worth it because you were rewarded with some really profound wisdom and love, and appreciation from him, in his own Mike Beigel way. He is already so greatly missed but I am happy and comforted that he for sure knew how much I loved him. Swipe for more photos and stories ❤️ @mikebeigelmusic

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Mike Beigel. Mike was a true innovator and pioneer of electronic music products. Through his 1970’s company, Musitronics, co-founded with Aaron Newman, Mike invented pedals and synthesizers that shaped the sound of many musicians. Mike’s work was embraced by Jerry Garcia, Stevie Wonder and Bootsy Collins to name a few, who created iconic and hit songs with his products, forever cementing his sounds into music history.

Mike continued to create musical inventions through Beigel Sound Lab and Mu-FX. Mike’s creations included the Mu-Tron III, Bi-Phase, Octave Divider, Phasor, Phasor II, Flanger, and Vol-Wah Pedal and he collaborated on products such as the Q-Tron, the Resynator, and the Orange Squeezer among many others. Mike held over 45 patents and was awarded a Certificate of Recognition for his achievements in music engineering and innovation by the Recording Academy.

Music aside, he was a beloved father, and a friend to many. While he was typically a man of few words, the wisdom he chose to share was profound. The resonance of Mike’s life, both in the sounds he shaped and the connections he made, will endure forever.

Since 2025, Mike and his family have been working with @forgottenfuturesmusic to preserve his musical prototypes. If you would like to support Mike’s legacy, please consider making a donation to forgottenfuturesmusic.org by @resynator

We’d be hard pressed to find an event that represents YSFF values and our programming North Star more:

A FREE event Presented by @ohiogoestothemovies, Resynator is a film about a daughter (Alison Tavel) searching for a post humous relationship with her father and finding it by restoring a synthesizer he built before she was born. Aided by estranged family, lost friends, fellow inventors and celebrated musicians (Peter Gabriel, Fred Armisen, Grace Potter, Gotye and more), Alison goes on a journey that unlocks secrets and complex truths through which a father/daughter bond is finally born.

This film truly hits all the chords (Pun intended). It’s a remarkable story and masterfully made… and did we mention it was FREE. SUNDAY OCT 4 3:15PM +Q&A WITH ALISON TAVEL. RSVP IN BIO/WEBSITE LINK. taken in The Foundry Theater at Antioch College by @resynator

In 2024 Resynator screened at an awesome indie fest called the Lake County Film Fest and this year they’re sponsoring a film screening series and have included Resynator! It won the Jury award there and I pasted what the Jury wrote on the next slide because it’s exactly the kind of response you dream of getting. I really appreciate Nat and everyone who put these festivals together and that they continue to keep Resynator in mind :) Ticket link in my bio. *Savoy, IL! by @resynator

Today is my late father’s birthday. My dad was fascinated and involved with a concept called bio music, and used an early version of the Resynator to test his theories with a goal of eventually helping people work through emotions and trauma through brainwave tracking with music and light. This film isn’t that, obviously, but a lot of people have told me that the film has inspired them to reconnect with their estranged child and others have gone through their parents things after watching. It’s something I had hoped would happen and a big reason why I decided to keep filming when the story turned personal. I’ve been trying to lean into that and use the film as a tool for healing, and I think it is something he would have supported. Happy Birthday Don 🪐 by @resynator

My wonderful friend @cindeloh put this video together for me from my @resynator premiere in London ❤️🇬🇧❤️ I wish I could relive it again and again. Thank you to Matt Musty, Dan Hall, Kendra Frost, Mike Kauffman and Josh Weller for taking so much time out of your lives to care for this project and this event. And thank you to EVERYONE else who invited friends and came out to support an indie film. Your messages post-screening have been some of the kindest and most treasured moments for me. I love what this film does to people after they watch it and I’m never going to stop pushing for people to watch it. ❤️ by @resynator

I have so much more to say, and so many more people to thank (and so many texts and emails to respond to) but I just first needed to give a shout to @kendra_j_frost who I met through @ispeakmachine many moons ago (and who are both in the film) - because she has championed this film since we met and her spirit and her London community came out HARD for this premiere and made me feel, not just warm and welcome, but wanted. Kendra is a true artist in every sense of the word, I’m such a fan of her music and the way she carries her life. Thanks for making the night, and the lead up to the night unforgettable and easy and exciting. I should have given a shout from the stage and I blew it!! I’m the worst! ❤️ by @resynator

I am so sad to write this — and this video from 2018 about the Resynator project is so wonderful, but really hard to watch — because Professor Scott Deal has passed away. Scott was the director of the Tavel Center at IU, and the modernized Resynator prototype that is in development was all due to him recognizing the importance of this project and championing it every step of the way. The last time I spoke to Scott was a few months ago; I had a meeting with the Dean, and Scott was in it too, and afterwards he called me and told me he was proud of me, not just for the way I handled the situation but for how I have managed this project as a whole. He then told me he loved me and that he was admitted to Hospice and that he hoped he would be able to see me again before he left. I am so crushed that I didn’t get to see him, but I am comforted knowing that he was at peace with the reality. His passing is a huge loss to Indiana University, Herron, The Donald Louis Tavel Arts & Tech Research Center, and it’s a huge, huge loss to me. We will finish the Resynator prototype project (with many thanks to Scott’s right hand man Harry Chaubey) and we’ll always have W. Scott Deal to thank for championing it from day one. My heart goes out to his family, friends, colleagues and students. ❤️ by @resynator
