As we close Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month we’d like to highlight one more athlete.

Who is she?

For years, that was the question Crystal asked herself.

On October 11, 2008, her life changed forever when she sustained a spinal cord injury.

The woman who once felt confident, independent, and surrounded by people suddenly had to rely on others for things she once did without thinking.

She went from the hospital to rehabilitation, to a nursing home, and eventually back home.

But home didn’t feel like home.

She didn’t recognize herself.

Eighteen years later, Crystal can finally answer the question she spent so long asking:

“Who is she?”

She is a woman who has faced grief, anger, fear, loneliness, and uncertainty and found her way through them.

Through counseling and therapy, Crystal learned to let go of the emotions that were holding her back and rediscover the parts of herself that were still there all along: her creativity, her voice, her personality, her gifts, and her purpose.

📚 She found her way back to writing, publishing A Wise Woman Once Asked, “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” Conversations on self-worth, boundaries, and emotional truth.

🎤 She hosts a podcast: Relationship Status: Uncomplicated

🎶 She found a way to bring her love of music back to life through AI-assisted artistry and has released five music projects under the name CRYSTALLYZED

And now, being back in therapy at Revive is giving Crystal renewed hope, confidence, and strength to get back out into the world to travel, explore, create, and live life to the fullest.

Her SCI changed her life.

But it never erased who she was.

So, who is she?

In her own words:

She is CRYSTALLYZED.

All Crystal.
Half paralyzed.

Still becoming. Still creating. Still living. 💜 by @reviveclt

This SCI Awareness Month we are highlighting some of the incredible athletes in our community who are rewriting what life after an injury can look like.

Meet David

On February 2, 2026, his life changed in an instant.

A slip on ice while walking his dog left him lying in the middle of the road, unable to move. He was rushed to the hospital, underwent surgery to stabilize his cervical spine, and was diagnosed with a C2 incomplete spinal cord injury.

After a week in the ICU, he began rehabilitation.

He was told he had only a 20% chance of regaining his pre-injury function.

Walking again wasn’t expected.

But on his third day of rehab, his physical therapist looked at him and said:

“We’re going to get you up and walking.”

Those words became a challenge. A promise. A reason to keep going.

Recovery hasn’t been easy.

There have been painful days, frustrating setbacks, and moments of uncertainty. Progress didn’t happen overnight.

It came one small victory at a time: a little more strength, a little more control, one more movement, one more step.

He still faces challenges, especially with his left hand and arm. But every week brings reminders that recovery is still happening.

That first step was about so much more than walking. It was proof that progress can come from the hardest places. That setbacks don’t get the final word. That recovery is not always linear but it is worth continuing to pursue.

Today, he’s working toward the life he wants to get back to: traveling with his family, picking up his grandchildren, playing golf, grilling, and returning to woodworking.

Those goals are more than activities.

They’re the reason he keeps showing up.

Still recovering. Still fighting. Still moving forward.

And he’s not done yet 💪 by @reviveclt

This SCI Awareness Month we are highlighting some of the incredible athletes in our community who are rewriting what life after an injury can look like.

Meet Raf

A husband. A dad to twins. A dentist. A farmer. A woodworker. A cyclist. A scuba diver. A motorcyclist. A traveler. An adventurer.

He was always doing something, going somewhere, building something, fixing something.

Then, on September 21, 2025, everything changed. An SUV traveling more than 50 mph struck him from behind while he was stopped on his motorcycle.

Three spinal cord injuries. Months in the hospital and rehab. Double vision. Vocal cord paralysis. And a whole new reality where things most of us take for granted can become enormous challenges. Things like getting out of bed, getting dressed, personal hygiene, and navigating a world created by and for ambulatory people all require patience and adaptation now.

But here’s what we want you to see:

The person you were before SCI doesn’t disappear.

Raf is back working part-time managing his dental practice where he has committed the past 28 yrs to improving access to care for NC’s underprivileged children. He also continues to push toward goals that once seemed impossible:

🦷 Returning to chairside dentistry
🚗 Driving again
🚴 Ride his Onewheel
🚜 Getting on his tractors & return to farm chores
👀 Eliminate double vision
✈️ Travel again
💪 Regain independence

SCI changed Raf’s life. It didn’t take away his purpose. He knows recovery isn’t a straight line. He also knows he’s not done.

There is still work to do. Places to go. Things to build. Adventures to have. People to love. And dreams worth chasing.

This is why we share the before and after. Not to pretend SCI is easy, but to show that there can still be a whole lot of life after SCI.

Follow Raf’s journey as he continues to heal, adapt, work, dream, and live. by @reviveclt

This Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, we’re highlighting some of the incredible athletes in our community who are rewriting what life after an injury can look like.

🦋 Meet Hannah

August 3rd 2024 two weeks before she was supposed to start college, Hannah’s life changed in an instant.

A car accident left her with a T6 spinal cord injury. She was rushed to LCH, where she underwent major surgery to stabilize her spine. Just five days later, she was flown to Shepherd Center to begin four months of intensive rehabilitation.

Her world had been turned upside down.

But somewhere between the unknowns, the pain, the grief, and the hard work, Hannah began to rebuild.

She learned how to move again.
How to laugh again.
How to dream again.

And eventually, she learned how to look at her life not through the lens of everything she had lost, but through the possibilities of everything that was still ahead.

And look at her now…
✈️ Flying to Colorado for an adaptive sports camp
🚗 Driving again
🎓 Moving into college and living independently just one year after her accident
🚴‍♀️ Biking
🦿 Walking in her leg braces
🎶 Going to concerts and living the life she loves

These aren’t just accomplishments. They’re pieces of a life she fought incredibly hard to rebuild.

Behind every milestone are countless hours of work, frustration, determination, tears, laughter, setbacks, victories, and people who refuse to let her believe that her injury defines what is possible.

And Hannah isn’t finished.
Not even close.

Her story is still being written. And we have no doubt that there are so many more adventures, dreams, and milestones ahead. 💜

Anna, I, and Riggs are SO incredibly proud of you. 🥹💜 We are honored and thankful that you have allowed us to be a small part of your journey.

Watching you grow, heal, challenge yourself, and create a life that is uniquely yours has been such a gift.
We can’t wait to see where you go next.

This is only the beginning. 🦋

This Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, we’re highlighting some of the incredible athletes in our community who are rewriting what life after an injury can look like.

Meet Rachel

Rachel has always lived life full throttle — surfing, snowboarding, traveling the world, riding motorcycles and one wheels, and flying paramotors. She’s a trainer and Vice President of the US Powered Paragliding Association.

On November 17, 2025, while on a paramotor trip in Egypt, Rachel’s life changed in an instant when she crashed into a sand dune. She sustained a T11 spinal cord injury along with a broken femur, broken ankle, torn ACL/MCL and meniscus, and other significant injuries.

After spending three weeks in Egypt before she was stable enough to return to the States, Rachel faced months of surgeries, complications, and hospitalization. It wasn’t until six months after her accident that she was finally cleared to begin rehabilitation.

And then she got to work.

Rachel joined the Revive Crew in July and she hasn’t looked back. 🔥

🚙She has adapted her car so she can drive.
🧍🏽‍♀️She’s performing stand-pivot transfers.
🚶🏻‍♀️She’s walking with a walker.
🪂 She adapted a trike and she’s back up in the sky doing what she loves.

But what we’re most proud of isn’t just what Rachel is doing physically.

It’s her attitude. Her determination. Her willingness to work. Her ability to keep moving forward even when the road hasn’t been easy.

Rachel, your injury may have changed your path, but it clearly hasn’t changed the way you show up for life.

We are incredibly proud of you and all the hard work you continue to put in every single day.

Thank you for trusting Revive to be a small part of your story. 💜

We can’t wait to see where you go next.

Because this story is far from over.💪
