We are very grateful to be the recipients of donations made in the WildArt Bird Photography Awards (@wildartbpa)!

With the generous donations Perth NRM is launching an exciting new initiative to grow Cockatoo Cafés across Perth, to provide essential food for endangered cockatoos.

Our first round of Cockatoo Cafe Expressions of Interest will open soon!

We’re teaming up with @trilliontrees_au to create ready-to-go packs of Hakeas and Banksias, carefully selected for small, medium and large spaces.

There’ll be a suitable size for everyone to apply, even schools!

Commencing with thanks to generous donations from WildArt, these seedling packs will be significantly subsidised, making it easier and more affordable to create a Cockatoo Café.

☀️ Welcome to Kambarang - Known as the Season of Birth, or the Second Spring!

Kambarang (October – December) brings the return of warmer weather and longer, drier days. Orchids, kangaroo paws, and banksias are in bloom. Reptiles wake from hibernation and search for the warmth of the sun, and be careful as Koolbaries (magpies) will swoop to protect their nesting young.

We share this information respectfully, acknowledging Noongar people as the knowledge holders of the seasonal calendar and the cultural knowledge shared through publicly available sources.

🐝 Our very own Luke McMillan has been hard at work creating more stunning native bee hotels for our ReWild Perth Demonstration Garden.

We're in the planning stages of developing a guide so that you can create your own version of these stylish pieces of habitat and turn your garden into a native bee haven!

We currently don't have an ETA, but keep your eyes on our socials 👀

Join us this Satuday in the @shireofmundaring to learn how you can ReWild your garden to provide essential food for the Endangered Carnaby’s Cockatoo. Any garden can provide food for wildlife. Learn how every plant matters and just one plant can make a difference.

Come along to meet Princess Rex from Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre, a beautiful Baudin’s Cockatoo!

We are also very lucky to be joined by Dr Christine Groom who will have her fabulous book “Creating Black Cockatoo Friendly Suburbs” for sale!

💧 Freshwater wonders are waiting right under our noses in Perth! This World Lake Day, discover four remarkable lakes in and around our city:

🪨 Lake Richmond, Rockingham: Walk the boardwalk and see a critically endangered community of ancient thrombolites.
🦢 Galup / Lake Monger, Wembley: Visit this culturally significant urban lake, renowned for its iconic black swans.
🦆 Herdsman Lake / Noogenboro, Churchlands: Explore Perth’s largest inner-city wetland remnant—home to more than 100 bird species.
🚣 Lake Leschenaultia, Chidlow: Escape to the Perth Hills for walking, swimming, kayaking and camping.

These lakes are beautiful places to explore—but they also provide vital habitats for wildlife. 🌿
When you visit:
🥾 Stay on designated paths
🍞 Avoid feeding waterbirds
🐕 Pick up after your pets
♻️ Take all rubbish home

You can help from home, too. Keep fertiliser, leaves and garden clippings out of stormwater drains to prevent them from reaching our waterways. Explore them. Appreciate them. Help protect them. 💙
