Exciting times in the Perth NRM ReWild Demonstration garden, we have just seeded our recently installed pond with local tadpoles!

We connected with Grace from Rivervale through the ‘Perth Tadpole Exchange’ group on Facebook who very generously donated some very healthy fat taddies from her home pond.

Perth’s landscape was dominated by wetlands prior to development and this sensational community program helps us to rebuild those wetland ecosystems.

There are a couple of simple rules that help keep existing and new ecosystems safe:

🐸 Adult frogs should never be moved
🐸 Tadpoles should only be moved a maximum of 3 suburbs away on the coastal plain and 2 suburbs away in the Perth Hills
🐸 Tadpoles should not be moved between the Coastal Plain and the Perth Hills

It was a pleasure to have our guest to the office, Jeff Hansen, former CEO of Sea Shepherd Australia do the honours of seeding the pond.

You’re looking at WA’s Early-Career Scientist of the Year!
Still abuzz - I live and breathe the science of conserving native bees and other pollinators, and so having my research and outreach efforts recognised like this has been truly uplifting.
ECRs are often told that if they want to succeed, they should go abroad and do a postdoc elsewhere. This means leaving behind pets (like my darling dog Zephyr who I named a new species of native bee after), and makes starting a family difficult, and - especially for those in ecology - it means leaving behind the expertise and intimate knowledge you have of your local ecosystems. The WA native bees need me, and I’m glad that I’ve continued to build up research and share my knowledge on effective native bee conservation with Western Australian institutions, environmental organisations, community and children.

You can find out more about native bees, and support the research and outreach I do - much of which is voluntary - my subsribing to my Patreon The Bee Babette:

Next up - an Australian Native Bee & Pollinator Conservation Strategy.

Thank you for the video Terrace Loft!

We are very grateful to be the recipients of donations made in the WildArt Bird Photography Awards (@wildartbpa)!

With the generous donations Perth NRM is launching an exciting new initiative to grow Cockatoo Cafés across Perth, to provide essential food for endangered cockatoos.

Our first round of Cockatoo Cafe Expressions of Interest will open soon!

We’re teaming up with @trilliontrees_au to create ready-to-go packs of Hakeas and Banksias, carefully selected for small, medium and large spaces.

There’ll be a suitable size for everyone to apply, even schools!

Commencing with thanks to generous donations from WildArt, these seedling packs will be significantly subsidised, making it easier and more affordable to create a Cockatoo Café.

Keep an eye on our socials and newsletter for the opening of EOIs!

Thank you to all the community members big and small who helped us #rewildmarmion this morning. It was such a great day and we can't wait to see the plants grow vibrant and our little hub come to life ☕️🪴

A big thank you to @georgieeee_e and @rewild.perth for making this initiative happen and for supporting @plymptonscafe with coffees for all.

It is so great when we see the community come together to support each other and the beautiful area that we are lucky to live in.

The sunny days of Spring can make it feel like your entire garden requires heavy watering. Steve from ReWild Perth explains why targeted hand watering of new plants is best at this time of year!

☀️ Welcome to Kambarang - Known as the Season of Birth, or the Second Spring!

Kambarang (October – December) brings the return of warmer weather and longer, drier days. Orchids, kangaroo paws, and banksias are in bloom. Reptiles wake from hibernation and search for the warmth of the sun, and be careful as Koolbaries (magpies) will swoop to protect their nesting young.

We share this information respectfully, acknowledging Noongar people as the knowledge holders of the seasonal calendar and the cultural knowledge shared through publicly available sources.

This initiative is funded by the Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust and delivered by Perth NRM, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners panel.

A little more habitat, a little more balance in the ecosystem.

A big thank you to @ourveteranshaven for building us an owl box to install here at 11 Acre Farm!

We’re always looking for ways to work *with* nature rather than against it. That means creating an environment where beneficial wildlife can thrive and play its part in a healthy, balanced ecosystem.

Our new owl box is designed to provide shelter for the Southern Boobook, also known as the *Nyawoo-nyawoo* in Noongar. These small, nocturnal native owls are found throughout the Perth region and feed on a variety of prey, including rodents, insects, reptiles and small birds. By encouraging natural predators onto the farm, we hope to support a more natural approach to pest management.

Providing nesting and roosting boxes is also a way to help compensate for the loss of natural tree hollows, which can take many decades to develop. It’s a small but meaningful step towards creating more habitat for our native wildlife.

We used the fantastic resources from ReWild Perth to guide this project. If you’re interested in attracting native wildlife to your own patch, their Southern Boobook guide is a great place to start: https://rewildperth.com.au/resource/southern-boobook/

Thanks again to OVH for helping us put this idea into action.
