Located in Lavarone, in the Italian region of Trentino, Drago Vaia Regeneration is a monumental wooden dragon sculpture created by artist Marco Martalar. Measuring approximately 16 metres long and 7 metres tall, it was built using roots and wood from trees that fell during Storm Vaia in 2018, which devastated forests across the Italian Alps.

The original dragon was destroyed by an arson attack in August 2023. Rather than letting the sculpture disappear forever, Martalar decided to create a new, even more impressive dragon. Completed in 2024, the new artwork incorporates the surviving charred remains of the original sculpture, alongside wood that the artist deliberately burned to give it its distinctive black appearance.

Today, the dragon stands as a powerful symbol of resilience, rebirth and the relationship between humanity and nature. What was once a natural disaster, followed by an act of destruction, has become an extraordinary work of art that transforms damaged wood into something remarkable.

Located in northern Lithuania, the Hill of Crosses (Kryžių kalnas) is one of the most remarkable religious and historical sites in Europe. Covered with more than 200,000 crosses, crucifixes and rosaries, this unique place has become a powerful symbol of faith, hope and peaceful resistance.

The tradition of placing crosses on the hill dates back to the 19th century. During the Soviet occupation, authorities repeatedly destroyed the crosses in an attempt to suppress religious expression and Lithuanian national identity. However, people continued returning to the hill, secretly bringing new crosses and rebuilding what had been destroyed.

Today, every cross represents a personal story, a prayer, a tribute to a loved one or a symbol of hope. In 1993, Pope John Paul II visited the site, bringing international attention to this extraordinary place.

More than a religious landmark, the Hill of Crosses stands as a lasting reminder that even when a symbol of faith is destroyed, the determination of a people can keep its meaning alive.

During China’s rapid economic expansion in the 2000s, enormous real estate projects were launched across the country, driven by rising demand, urbanization and ambitious development plans. But some projects were never completed or were eventually abandoned.

In Guang’ao, these unfinished buildings and empty structures have been slowly reclaimed by nature, creating an eerie landscape that looks more like the setting of a post apocalyptic movie than a modern construction site. Concrete structures stand surrounded by vegetation, while streets and buildings remain largely deserted.

Scenes like this can be found in several parts of China and offer a striking glimpse into the consequences of overdevelopment, changing economic conditions and real estate projects that failed to reach their original ambitions.

Château de Chambord was commissioned by King Francis I in 1519, at the beginning of the French Renaissance. Built in the Loire Valley, it was designed as an extraordinary royal residence combining French medieval architecture with strong Italian Renaissance influences.

Despite its immense scale, Francis I did not use Chambord as a permanent residence. During his reign, he reportedly spent only 72 nights there. The château was primarily a symbol of royal power, ambition and prestige rather than a practical home.

Chambord is famous for its monumental size, hundreds of rooms, numerous towers and its distinctive double helix staircase, traditionally associated with Leonardo da Vinci. Its construction continued for decades, long after Francis I’s reign, making it one of the most remarkable Renaissance castles in France.

The Knife Angel is an 8 metre tall sculpture made from more than 100,000 knives and blades collected across the United Kingdom. Created by British artist Alfie Bradley and completed in 2018, the monument was designed to raise awareness of knife crime and its devastating consequences.

The weapons used to create the sculpture came from police confiscations, knife amnesty campaigns and voluntary donations. Some had been used in violent crimes, and certain blades arrived at the workshop still bearing traces of blood. Before being incorporated into the artwork, the knives were cleaned, sterilised and blunted.

The sculpture depicts a monumental angel with enormous wings covered in thousands of blades. Its imposing appearance serves as a reminder of the lives lost and families affected by knife violence. Messages dedicated to victims have also been engraved on some of the blades, giving the monument a deeply personal meaning.

Weighing several tonnes, the Knife Angel is more than a work of art. It is a memorial to victims of knife crime and a powerful call for greater awareness, prevention and an end to violence.
