The construction of Saint-Étienne in Caen, also known as the Abbaye-aux-Hommes, began in 1066.

This beautiful Romanesque abbey was founded by William the Conqueror, who was also laid to rest here (disclaimer: only one bone is what is left of his body). Originally intended as a monastery for Benedictine monks, the building reflects the power and wealth of the Norman dukes.

Over the centuries, the abbey has been carefully maintained and restored, making it one of the best-preserved examples of Romanesque architecture in France.

Description of the Façade and Choir

The western façade of Saint-Étienne is a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, characterized by its imposing symmetry and the two massive towers that dominate Caen’s skyline. These towers, later expanded during the Gothic period, give the façade a vertical accent that was revolutionary at the time.

The choir, completed in the 13th century, shows the transition from Romanesque to Gothic style with its tall, slender windows that fill the interior with light. The beautifully carved high altar forms the radiant centerpiece of the abbey church.

The interior

Inside Saint-Étienne, you experience a harmonious and serene atmosphere. The elevation, with its three levels consisting of arcades, triforium, and clerestory, provides a rhythmic and orderly appearance that is characteristic of Romanesque architecture.

The sturdy columns and vaults give the space a sense of stability and eternity. Despite the massive stone construction, the interior is remarkably light, thanks to the strategic placement of the windows.

World War II: Destruction and Safe Haven

During World War II, the abbey played a crucial role; it served as a refuge for the citizens of Caen during the intense bombings of the Battle of Normandy. Although the abbey suffered significant damage from the bombings, it provided protection and hope in a time of great need.

Château de Chambord, located in France’s Loire Valley, is one of the most iconic and extraordinary Renaissance castles in the world. Built in the early 16th century under the reign of King Francis I, it was designed as a grand hunting lodge and a symbol of royal power rather than a permanent residence. The château is famous for its breathtaking architecture, blending French medieval traditions with innovative Italian Renaissance elements an influence often linked to Leonardo da Vinci, who was closely associated with Francis I.

The castle features over 400 rooms, 365 fireplaces, and 84 staircases, with its double-helix staircase being the most remarkable architectural masterpiece. Its vast rooftop skyline, decorated with ornate towers and chimneys, gives Chambord the appearance of a fairytale palace rising above the surrounding forests. The château is encircled by Europe’s largest enclosed park, originally created as royal hunting grounds.

Today, Château de Chambord stands as a UNESCO World Heritage site and a symbol of French history, artistic ambition, and architectural brilliance, attracting visitors from around the world who come to admire its grandeur and unique design.
