In the winter of 2023 we got to finally work together with @didier_konings_art on his mid-length film @wittewievenfilm . I’ve always wanted to work with Didier because of his amazing directorial skills in storytelling, atmosphere & visuals. When he told me the story about the “Witte Wieven” (old Dutch folklore) and what he wanted to do with it, I was instantly on board.

With the film premiering on Dutch television yesterday we can finally start sharing some of the effects me and my team did.

Starting of with “het Witte Wief”, forrest witch character. Lurking in the mist. Something we designed together with @didier_konings_art and his team of excellent designers from LA: @david_masson_sg , @houstonsharp & @kylebrowndesign . This was such a pleasure working on this, since these creature makeups don’t really happen that often in Holland.

In the pictures: final sculpture before floating (80% details), in @monsterclayusa medium grey. I tried to use a lot of real bark molds for casting textures in and applying it thinly over the sculpt.

“The Legend of Trodrius, The Earthshaker“
Trodrius stood taller than the tallest trees, his skin was the color of the stones, and his eyes burned like the heart of volcanoes. With hands as large as hills, he could lift entire forests or flatten cities in the blink of an eye. But despite his immense strength, Trodrius was not a creature of malice. He was a guardian of balance, ensuring that the natural order of the world was preserved.

Demo sculpture for the upcoming @tad.playgrounds in Berlin 24/25th of May. This was printed on my Elegoo Jupiter, then molded and cast in @monsterclayusa to be finished. There are still tickets available for my workshop “Full figure creature sculpture”.

On this bust I will be demonstrating the new paint system by @smoothon called Maker Pro Paint. The demo and workshop are very kindly supported by @formxamsterdam . Please go check them out!

📢 SPREKER SESSIE #15 - ROLF TE BOOIJ 📢

Rolf is de oprichter en het gezicht achter RFX Propmaking. Hij studeerde Production Design aan de Nederlandse Filmacademie en studeerde af in 2017. RFX heeft inmiddels aan behoorlijk uiteenlopende producties gewerkt. Publiek genoemde titels zijn onder andere: Wednesday, Three Body Problem, Brimstone, Artemis Fowl, Dark, Ares, Captain Nova, Witte Wieven en Superkrachten voor je Hoofd. Daarnaast werkt RFX in relatie tot opdrachtgevers als Artis, Naturalis en Studio Drift. Niet alleen filmproducties, maar ook museale, artistieke en experimentele projecten.

Over de Studio Camera Sessies
Onze Sessies zijn laagdrempelige, openbaar toegankelijke artist talks in een intieme zaal in Slachtstraat Filmtheater in Utrecht. Drie makers worden door @luukheezen geïnterviewd over hun makerschap, positie in het werkveld en ervaringen in de industrie aan de hand van een thema. En belangrijk: ze laten daarbij heel veel van hun werk zien! Er is alle ruimte voor jouw vragen. Na afloop praten we verder op de borrel. Het eerste drankje krijg je van ons.

Ever wonder how sci-fi creatures and film props go from sketch to screen?

We are pleased to invite Rolf te Booij, a practical SFX artist, for a presentation of his extensive and complex work of crafting exceptional, realistic props for creative industries. Rolf will share what really happens behind the scenes of filmmaking, the process of developing creatures, and the workflow with traditional and modern moldmaking, casting, and sculpture techniques. A rare chance to hear directly from someone who creates the magic you see on screen. The offline presentation will be held in English.

Rolf te Booij is the founder of RFX Propmaking, specializing in creating high quality practical special effects for the film, theater, and design industry from around the world. Together with his team he has worked on a wide range of difficult projects, from special make-ups, character design, till animated sculpture. Rolf has collaborated with companies such as Netflix, for TV series as “Wednesday”, “Dark”, “3 Body Problem”, made creatures for Oscar nominated films as “The Secret Agent” directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, “Witte Wieven” a feature film by Didier Konings, and many more.

Beside the studio, Rolf is leading an academy, dedicated to sharing the complex craft of practical special effects. The programme includes deconstructing stories and building working frames for the future creatures, modeling, mold making, make-up FX, animatronics and more. The academy regularly invites leading industry artists to share specialized knowledge across these techniques.

For @zuen_bresser ‘s “Rietland” we got to create this fake body. It’s a strange thing making something in your studio and it looks realistic. But on set in the reeds partially clothed it even upset me a bit. Then realizing the visual impact an object can make. Even though briefly shown in the film, a super important storyteller. Big thanks to my friends @lizzkooij & @clarajanet (production designers)

Custom reptile silicone pullover mask designed for @rundfunkboys' latest season “Schwalbe”. Given the time constraint, we opted for @nomadsculpt and 3D printed the molds on a @bambulab_official, a technique well-suited for the mockumentary style masks. taken in MAAK Haarlem by @rfx_propmaking

2025 has been a wild year—personally and professionally. But more than anything, I got to work side by side with my closest friends and some of the most talented people in the industry, creating crazy cool stuff every single day. Not many people get to say that.

This is a huge appreciation post for everyone who made last year such a success. We’ve been grinding hard and setting the stage for what’s next. 2026 is already in full motion, with some big, exciting projects lining up.
