📢“Northern Rock” visits the RH&DR for the first time.

✨We are pleased to announce the star visitor to our Autumn Gala Weekend will be “Northern Rock” from the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway. The event which takes place on the 17th and 18th October will see “Northern Rock” visit the RH&DR for the very first time since it was built 50 years ago.

🎉“Northern Rock” has been celebrating its 50th Anniversary throughout 2026.

🚂Constructed at @rersteam in 1976 with an attractive narrow gauge outline the locomotive quickly became the R&ER’s flagship locomotive and the mainstay of their services. The design of the locomotive was directly influenced by a visit of the RH&DR’s “Northern Chief” to Ravenglass in 1971. The design proved to be so successful two sister engines were built for a railway in Japan. “Northern Rock” will be hauling trains between Hythe and New Romney.

👏Visiting alongside “Northern Rock” will be “Soony” from the @perrygrove_railway. A different scale locomotive to what normally operates at the RH&DR but has an enthusiastic following throughout the UK. “Soony” will be offering shorter rides starting from New Romney station.

⏰An intensive timetable will be in operation over the weekend which will feature all the available RH&DR locomotives alongside the visitors, more details to follow on this in due course!

🍻As well as the trains, the popular “Full Clark” real ale & cider bar will be open at New Romney station, showcasing a selection of drinks from local Kentish breweries.

💭General Manager Stuart Ross said “We are pleased to be welcoming “Northern Rock” to the RH&DR for the first time. It has taken 50 years to get it here so it is defintiely overdue. We are looking forward to see how it performs particularly as one of our locomotives had some influence on its design. We are thankful to the teams at Ravenglass and Perrygrove for assisting us in putting on this exciting event”.

💚We're running our Green timetable today!

🍴All our cafes are open for hot food & drinks, and our model railway exhibition is open at New Romney alongside our heritage centre.

⛔️The railway will be closed on Monday 28th September.

💛We'll reopen on our Yellow Timetable from Tuesday 29th September - Thursday 1st October.

📢Please note, there is a slight change to this weekends green timetable:

💚The 09:30 from New Romney to Hythe, will now depart 15 minutes earlier at 09:15.
💚The 10:30 from Hythe to New Romney will now depart 10 minutes earlier at 10:20.

All other services remain the same as previously advertised in our Green 15mph Timetable, which is available on our website and at our stations.

This is currently only scheduled for this weekend (Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th September) but if there are any future operational changes, this information will be released on our website & social media pages.
