OUT NOW ✨

Ava Shadmani’s Yesterday’s Seven Thousand Years is now streaming.

Through her vision as creative curator, Iranian violinist Ava Shadmani brings together composers and performers whose voices reflect both the depth of Persian lineage and the openness of modern collaboration.

Featuring Ava Shadmani on violin, Mehrdad Gholami on flute, Kiandokht Nouri on piano, and Jonathan Lo on cello, this luminous new album features works by Amir Eslami, Armin Sanayei, Reza Vali, Neda Samavati, and Marcus Goddard.

The album explores a musical landscape shaped by the intertwined history, poetry, and traditions of Iran and its neighbouring regions. Traditional melodies from Baluchistan, Azerbaijan, and Iran’s diverse regional cultures are reimagined through modern composition, creating a space where cultural memory, longing, ritual, improvisation, and reinvention coexist.

Yesterday’s Seven Thousand Years invites listeners into a world where the past is not preserved at a distance, but felt deeply in the present.

"Hey Jimmy" was inspired by an unfortunate incident.

I was visiting a folk festival in rural Ireland last year, when a patron attempted to make me feel unwelcome (presumably because of my skin colour).

Though it was uncomfortable, I chose to turn this moment into music, and pay tribute to this silly, silly man.

The title also inspired me to turn it into a drum feature for our very own Jim Doxas, who will be joining us for our Toronto CD release Oct 15 at the Jazz Bistro.

Departures is out October 16 on Rhea Records.

In 2022, I spent time at the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka as part of a residency.

During that time, I was introduced to Ukusa Vannama, one of a collection of 18 vannamas associated with the courtly music of the Kandyan kings. I was immediately drawn to its haunting, plaintive melody. That melody stayed with me.

Eventually, it found its way into Departures.

For me, this piece represents one of the album’s most important musical departures — bringing a melody from Sri Lankan musical tradition into my own contemporary jazz language.

Ukusa Vannama — on Departures, October 16.
