I'll never forget the first time I heard Kenny Wheeler live.

What knocked me out was the sheer presence of the sound coming from his flugelhorn, and the emotional spectrum that seemed to flow out of him.

This is one of the many things that inspired me to write "Circling", originally a big band composition premiered at a Kenny Wheeler symposium in Saskatoon, and performed by Ingrid Jensen. On Departures, I reduced that arrangement to a small group version and the band played it so beautifully.

If you're listening to the version (and I hope you do!), you may be interested to know that it's the first song we recorded, and the only take.

Departures is available now on Rhea Records.

"Hey Jimmy" was inspired by an unfortunate incident.

I was visiting a folk festival in rural Ireland last year, when a patron attempted to make me feel unwelcome (presumably because of my skin colour).

Though it was uncomfortable, I chose to turn this moment into music, and pay tribute to this silly, silly man.

The title also inspired me to turn it into a drum feature for our very own Jim Doxas, who will be joining us for our Toronto CD release Oct 15 at the Jazz Bistro.

Departures is out October 16 on Rhea Records.

In 2022, I spent time at the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka as part of a residency.

During that time, I was introduced to Ukusa Vannama, one of a collection of 18 vannamas associated with the courtly music of the Kandyan kings. I was immediately drawn to its haunting, plaintive melody. That melody stayed with me.

Eventually, it found its way into Departures.

For me, this piece represents one of the album’s most important musical departures — bringing a melody from Sri Lankan musical tradition into my own contemporary jazz language.

Ukusa Vannama — on Departures, October 16.

Seven tracks. Seven stories.

DEPARTURES — a race through Singapore airport.

UKUSA VANNAMA — a haunting melody discovered in Sri Lanka.

MUSALADI VANNAMA — another journey into Sri Lankan musical tradition.

HEY, JIMMY! — frustration turned into music in Ireland.

CIRCLING — a Kenny Wheeler-inspired composition that changed form.

THE PICKLED HERRING BLUES — Sweden, food and a very non-traditional blues.

AUTUMN IN NEW YORK — love and overwhelm in the city.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll tell the stories behind the music.

I’m excited to announce that my fourth album as a leader, Departures, will be released October 16 on Rhea Records.

The album grew out of a period of major change in my life — the loss of my mother, a new job, family travels and the many experiences that come with moving through the world.

It’s also a musical departure. For this recording, I assembled a completely new group: Kevin Turcotte, Florian Hoefner, Jim Doxas and Jodi Proznick. We had never performed this music together, rehearsed minimally, and recorded the entire album live-off-the-floor in a single day.

There were risks. And there were plenty of unexpected moments.

I hope you’ll hear all of that in the music.

Departures — October 16, 2026.
And on October 15, we’ll celebrate the CD release at Jazz Bistro in Toronto.
