Edinburgh is one of those cities that rewards you for knowing a few things in advance. Here’s what I’d tell any friend coming for the first time:Skip the airport taxi. The Airlink 100 bus and the tram both take you straight into the city centre, faster and far cheaper than a taxi. You don’t need to rent a car. Edinburgh is compact, walkable, and the public transport is great. A rental is more headache than help - save it for when you head into the Highlands.Google Maps lies about distances. What looks like a 5 minute walk often involves stairs, a hill, or both. If you’re pushing a pram, rolling a suitcase, or just want an easier route, turn on “wheelchair-accessible route” in Google Maps. Same destination, far gentler walk.Edinburgh is a 3D city. Google Maps doesn’t always account for the levels. If it says you’ve arrived but you’re staring at a stone wall - look up. Or down. You might be on Victoria Street and the entrance is tucked away on a terrace you didn’t even know existed. Old Town is full of these. Book your dinners ahead. The good restaurants fill up days in advance, especially at weekends. If there’s somewhere specific you want to eat, book it ahead to make sure you get a table.P.S. You’ve probably heard that Edinburgh is a walkable city - and it is…Most of the main sights are close together, and many of you told me you easily hit 25k steps a day.But for some people, that can be too much…To save your legs from aching by day two, here is how to prepare:If you don’t walk much at home, start a month before your trip. Build up your endurance by walking more daily and adding stairs to your routine.Bring comfortable walking shoes with good grip. The cobblestones get incredibly slippery when it rains…Two quick ways to make navigating easier:Day 1 Strategy: Take a hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus. It is a great way to understand the city’s layout without burning out your legs straight away. It is also perfect if you are short on time or traveling with kids (some routes offer kids-go-free).Google Maps Hack: To avoid unexpected vertical climbs, turn on the “wheelchair-accessible route” option in your map settings. It’s the most photogenic time of year.If you visit during the last weekend of September, you can catch “Doors Open Days.” This is a massive free event where historic buildings and hidden spaces normally closed to the public open their doors for free.Expect changing weather - even summer isn’t always warm, and rain can appear anytime.Timing matters: August and Christmas are incredibly busy; January - March is calmer and better value.(note: If you’re coming this August.. or thinking about it… comment AUGUST GUIDE and I’ll send you the link to my free guide)Edinburgh is hilly… beautiful, but challenging in bad weather, so good shoes matter (those cobbles can be slippery when wet).P.S. Edinburgh is made for wandering… cobbled streets, endless steps, sneaky hills… and yes, very windy days.(Maybe not ideal for hats 😁)It’s a wonderfully walkable city, but you’ll probably walk more than you expect… especially if you’re exploring properly.A few local tips that really help:• Comfortable shoes with good grip (cobbles get slippery when wet)• A waterproof jacket with a hood• Layers… the weather can change quickly, even in summer• Smart timing… August and Christmas are busy; January to March is calmer and better valueEdinburgh is beautiful, but it is hilly - and in bad weather, good shoes make all the difference.P.S. There is so much more to Edinburgh Castle than just the view from the gates. It’s a place with layers of history, and you could easily spend a few hours exploring all the different corners.Here is what to look out for once you’re inside:St. Margaret’s Chapel This is the oldest building in Edinburgh. It’s tiny, peaceful, and feels a world away from the busy courtyards outside.Mons Meg It’s hard to miss this massive six-tonne siege gun. It’s one of the most impressive bits of medieval technology you’ll ever see up close.The Dog Cemetery A lot of people walk right past this, but it’s a very moving spot. It’s a small, quiet garden dedicated to the soldiers’ faithful companions.The Crown JewelsThe Honours of Scotland are officially back on display in their newly refurbished home.Afternoon Tea at the Castle If you want to make the visit a bit more special, you can book afternoon tea at the Queen Anne Room. They even offer a package that includes your castle admission, which is a great way to skip the standard ticket queue and have a base for the afternoon.Pro-tips for your visit:Go in the morning on weekdays: It is much quieter right when the gates open, giving you a completely different experience before the day’s main crowds arrive.P.S.
