I recently got the opportunity to connect with a long time friend and supporter, @shelbystanger - we first met when I was 17(?), working as an outdoor leadership instructor with @outdooroutreach . Shelby was a regular volunteer and would accompany us on surf trips helping us with mentoring and instructing my fellow youth. I am forever thankful to her for taking the time out of her life to share moments in the outdoors with us way back when.

Coming full circle, we got to sit and chat about my experiences as an athlete as well as some of the struggles I am faced with today and my goals as an outdoor ambassador. Forgive me. I am not an influencer, I don't do this for popularity and engagement. I do this because it is all I have in life. I do this because I was told I can't, and don't belong. I do this because it is my passion and purpose. I do this for me, my mental and physical health and for the generations to come after me to see that they belong. 🙇🏿‍♂️

I wanted to post this as a moment of zen...

But this is not a tone deaf influencer account.

There have been 22 Black bodies found hanging from trees in the past 18 months. 4 of those were in this past month of August, within miles of each other.

While y'all are tired of talking about race, they (the literal fucking KKK) are still hunting and killing us over it.

What you choose to ignore doesn't make it go away.

Know that when I get to have moments like these, it's not just for me, it's for the diaspora. I bring the ancestors with me to places we never thought we'd exist.

"A week in February."

I've not been very active online or very social in life. I'm spending more time with my phone in the other room, more time with my dog, more time outside. Because lately, I've been sitting with grief, so heavy, I've lost track of time and friends. Losing my first born dog and my moms a month apart shattered something inside me and I'm learning to live without knowing if that will ever be repaired.

I've not done much beyond live in solitude, mostly silent, reading, writing, taking care of my mentals and rationing my energy to love on the few folks that are regularly present in my life. I've set stricter boundaries for people's access to me and I'm not concerned with my love life. I get up riding when I can and am HELLA thankful for the continued support from brands that provide the tools and resources. When I'm at my lowest, I'm extremely grateful for the few good humans in my life that I can reach out to for support, mentorship, and guidance, you know who you are and you mean the world to me.

Daily, I'm reminding myself of my purpose and values;
Peace, power, presence, perseverance, and positivity.

Not much of the last one lately but I find joy where I can and I hold on for as long as the grief will allow me.

If you're going through it, I hope you do the same.

I rarely get to share this passion of mine with people closest to me. Having known this dude @vinceculliver since as early as '04. I was 14, mentoring him through @outdooroutreach , whoopin him in SKATE all through high school. I watched him become a leader in the outdoors and mentor to the generation after us. Now, we in our 30s, lapping the Bird together and discussing ways of making an impact in the communities that raised us.

That's my brother for real.
