First time in a few years I have been in the country for the 4th. The view from the roof didn’t suck.

For African American/Black communities, nature has always played a role in how we connect with one another. I was lucky enough to take my first naturalist class last year. I did so with hesitation, not because I felt I didn't belong, but because chasing titles such as " naturalist" , has never been my goal. I want to share knowledge of nature and how we, as a collective, are responsible for honoring the offerings and respecting the knowledge found in outdoor spaces.

#IAmANaturalist, I may not look or act as you assume I should , I was recently told "I don't dress like a naturalist" . We can carry ourselves in dress, talk and actions, as we always have and that doesn’t take away from the knowledge we carry. I think this is why @goulding_jr wears Jordan's while out hiking, a sign of being who he is, no matter the terrain.

We don't have to change who we instinctively are to be one with nature.

Go get your #Naturalist on and know that you are carrying a legacy with you.

I took the two pictures in the double- exposure above in 2021 while touring the Atlanta landmarks in the civil rights movement with my friend Natasha. I remember how proud she was to share all of the rich history of her adopted home. I could both see and feel the struggle for equality of the Black community in every place we visited.

If seems a bit demoralizing that it took 188 years to achieve civil rights in America (at least, legally) - and it appears that, barely 60 years later, these right are being challenged, abused, and now dismissed by our current administration. I can only hope that light can again triumph over darkness and we can regain our collective sanity and morality. Civil rights and human dignity shouldn't have a political party - it should be the fabric of the soul of our nation.

A profound thank you to everyone involved in any struggle for equity. And a heartfelt thank you to those who are, once again, having to fight for equality and human dignity.

Thank you Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Only love can do that"

Discernment is the ability to make a good judgement call. It’s an inner acknowledgment of how a person, choice or environment may impact your wellbeing (energetic, emotional, physical, spiritual) — paired with the willingness to respond in alignment to that knowing— and we just love the way @rhudsonsb spoke to this.

Book your AVY ED class this month and start this season with plenty of context to make your own good judgement calls as you explore the backcountry ✌🏼🏔️🏂
