Happy Doula Week 💕 I’ve been nurturing my own postpartum journey this time around, supporting other moms by means of counseling and therapeutic services (I’m an MSW). Thankful to not only be a doula but, to be served and poured into by so many doulas! I’ve resumed taking clients and am absolutely looking forward to my client postpartum and bringing that baby earthside fully empowered 🥰

Here’s a throwback of Lenox, my first born, in 2020 at the DONA Int’l postpartum training with my friends and colleagues @doula_rachel and @rothedoula 💕💕💕

So… I’ve been missing for a while 🤷🏽‍♀️ balancing life as a mother or two while honoring all the shifts it brings. Doula services have paused for me, but childbirth education is still available virtually ✨

This time around birth was a little different for me, less of an audience and more of an intimate experience with self. More self affirmations, more prayer, so much gratitude for a fully female birth team 🙏🏽

I’m here to remind you that an empowered birth is possible and very soon, if you would like my support in that journey, it will be available in any birth setting 💗

Until then, I’ll be basking in my babies honoring the epic journey of womanhood 🙌🏽🫶🏽

Happy New Year Folks 🤗💕

While my goal here at @rhythmsofbirth is always to educate and empower the goal is always to do that authentically, in a way that honors the fullness of birth and postpartum and all the variations.

The postpartum period can be such a beautiful time, it can also be equally overwhelming this is why I encourage you to seek help if you need additional support and support systems, if you see mama is in need of more support, step in the gap and inquire on ways to support her and her mental health needs 🙏🏽

Thank you @postpartumstress for being an amazing resource during the postpartum period and beyond ❤️ by @rhythmsofbirth

I remember taking this picture at a postpartum doula training I attended with @doula_rachel and @rothedoula right before the pandemic in 2020. The variety of breast spoke to the culture of diversity and inclusion in the doula community. I remember being pregnant with Lenox (who clearly came to this training lol) and learning about breastfeeding and the myth of fitting your whole areola in a newborns mouth 🤨 news flash, all breast are not created equal and this ain’t an option for every mama 😅😂

Looking at this picture brought me back to breastfeeding my newborn son with high expectations and frankly, struggling 😫 I had a baby with a lip and tongue tie which meant every nursing interaction before this was corrected was painful. Luckily I had the resources for the correction but, everyone doesn’t.

The early postpartum period is such a fragile time where parents are really just trying their best to feed their baby, sleep their baby and smooth their baby all while trying to remain functional. Let’s be the grace we needed or may one day need for new parents and it never hurts to offer some support 💕

Gentle reminder, regardless of how well intentioned you may be unsolicited advice can be more harmful than good sometimes 🤗

How you feed your little one is a very personal choice, if breastmilk is your choice, directly or in the bottle, or if you supplement this chart may be helpful 💗

One of the things I’ve learned in my breastfeeding journey of almost 3 years is that milk does indeed change and with great purpose, to meet the demands of your little one. Not only does composition change from month to month, it changes throughout the day and is responsive to your baby’s needs including illness.

Here are some fun facts about breastmilk:

1. breastfeeding burns between 500-600 calories daily.

2. Breast milk is a living substance that contains live cells, including stem cells.

3. Colostrum contains special proteins that coat your baby’s digestive tract from harmful bacteria.

4. Prolactin and oxytocin are released during breastfeeding helping you bond with yourself baby.

5. Breastmilk is not always white! If can be blue, green, yellow pink or orange depending on what you eat or drink!

More interesting facts on @medela_us website ✨

Breast feeding can be challenging sometimes, if you need assistance on this journey feel free to reach out for some basics, if you need more assistance local moms, I can recommend a few IBCLC lactation consultant 💗💗💗

Happy feedings 🤗 by @rhythmsofbirth

Birth plans or preferences are important! As a doula, I do these often and request that both partners are present to ensure that the physiological process of birth is understood as well as the preferences of the birthing person.

Why? Because so much of birth is psychological and when you have all this evidence on what is ideal for your birth along with your instinct, explaining your why to your partner in the frail state of labor can cause anxiety and second guessing.

It’s important to incorporate your support as much as you can and I know dad’s especially appreciate being included 🤗

Shoot me a DM if you would like help working on a birth plan from a DONA certified birth doula and Lamaze trained Childbirth Educator 💓

Keeping up on this app while balancing life gets tricky but, I’m here to support you and your birth in real life 🤞🏽🙏🏽

Shout out to @balanced.birth.couple for this amazing pictorial 🙏🏽

Misconceptions about labor, we all have them 🤷🏽‍♀️ Here mama looks fairly content while she labors, why you ask?

Well, it’s because labor isn’t how we see it on TV 📺 where it’s nonstop excruciating pain. It’s the reason some think it’s insane to do birth unmediated but, let me tell you something right now… it will end and the waves of contractions do go down sometimes with enough time to enjoy a popsicle 🤗

Here’s an acronym I remind all my clients of when it comes to pain:

Purposeful
Anticipated
Intermittent
Normal

Pain in labor is all of these things but pain can be managed once we understand it’s process 🙏🏽

If you have any doula inquiries please feel free to reach out via DM 💜

Happy World Breastfeeding week ♥️
The miracle of life and the body’s responsive capability to nurture it are a beautiful thing 🙌🏽 While breastfeeding can definitely have its struggles the bond is such a beautiful blessing 🙏🏽♥️ To the nursing moms out there, stay encouraged, this is one of the many beautiful gifts you will give your little one on this lifetime 🙏🏽❤️

To the ones that support this journey, thank you for all you do 🙏🏽💕

This video captures the instinctual newborn crawl where baby crawls to the breast for their first latch. It’s an instinct that happens in the immediate postpartum and is later lost but so wondrous to witness 😍

@your_latina_midwife says:

"Trust your baby.
Trust that your baby knows how to help in your birthing process.
Trust in your baby’s innate instincts.
Such instincts are so strong that they help baby crawl to your chest, guided by the color of your areola+nipple. They can smell your milk (because of the glands in your breast), and once at the breast, they know to open their mouth and begin sucking; somehow they know that such actions are going to benefit both them and you.
Their survival instincts are so connected to yours, that by latching onto your breast, they helping your uterus to clamp down and, therefore, slow your postpartum bleeding.
Isn’t that miraculous?
I would argue that babies are as much a part of your birth team as any other person in your birth space; and your baby is an ally of your recovery during postpartum.
May we all learn to respect, trust and listen to them♥️

Carla

It’s this mama’s joy for me 🙌🏽❤️ that oxytocin was doing it’s thang y’all! Witnessing the miracle of life hits different when you’ve seen mom progress through the stages of labor, through the pain, the sacrifice, through questioning how much longer and wondering if it could be done.

I’m here to tell you, it can! And when you think you can’t any more, you’re probably in transition 🤷🏽‍♀️🤣

This birth is one that will be forever etched in my memory 💕 Congratulations mama on your birth day and congratulations on your handsome prince 👑

Thank you for allowing me to be a part.

SN: that vernix, that skin to skin, this moment 🥺🙌🏽

Freedom of Movement is one of the keys 🔑 to keep labor going. The ability to move freely allows for your body to work with gravity and assist your baby in descending into the pelvic cavity. Freedom of movement also allows you to find “comfort” in positions that feel good and right to your body.

Some interventions will affect the freedom of movement ensure that you are aware prior to labor which interventions those are so that you may choose when it’s best to opt for them or to completely opt out.

Feel free to contact me for more information regarding a doula/childbirth education consultation or services.

SN: I’ve been missing family, I’m a mother, wife and masters student as well but I’m here 💕
