Every cinema is a vessel. Otonomia Bioskop will be an autonomous cinema and contemporary art centre built inside a kampung in Sembungan, Bantul, Yogyakarta which will present moving images and related media vital to our times. The starting team is composed of Riar Rizaldi and Hera Chan (founders & directors), B.M. Anggana (deputy director), Barry Beagan (architect), Jordan Marzuki (graphic designer), Uji Hahan (land partner), and Nathan Gunawan (builder). On October 1 at Krapela in Jakarta, we opened the hatch and read the instruments together—a first look at the building plans, the identity, and the programme 🚀 slated to open 2028

Yogyakarta in Indonesia has a lively cinema culture, based around community-organised screenings, but few permanent venues for arthouse films. Artist-filmmaker Riar Rizaldi and curator Hera Chan hope to address that gap with Otonomia Bioskop, an independent cinema and moving-image art centre they plan to open in Sembungan, south of the city, in early 2029. They will present the programme and plans today, ahead of Art Jakarta, with a pre-screening event at Krapela in South Jakarta.

The proposed venue would include a 50-to-60-seat indoor cinema, an outdoor screening area, a gallery and a public park. The founders envisage weekly screenings, with room for guest programmers. They will look to bring in films rarely shown in mainstream cinemas.

Ocula’s Zian Chen (@zianchen7) spoke to founders Rizaldi (@riarrr) and Chan (@hera_sc) about how they will plug the gap between multiplexes and a thriving community arts scene.

Tropenkolder will screen at Singapore International Film Festival @sgiffest 2026 in the Southeast Asian Short Film Competition section. It feels a bit like coming home! I’m extremely grateful to SGIFF for always supporting our work, and, as always, for putting together such an insane line-up (this year especially!). Super looking forward to it! Extremely nostalgic to be back in Bandung Timur, the place where I was born and raised, and where I spent more than half of my life, filming an upcoming project with @exotica_neurotica A week full of “brutality” and laughter in many senses, but one that brought back so many memories of growing up in this part of Bandung. An industrial frontier, a fragile ecosystem shaped by abandoned infrastructure, and a geotraumatic zone. Working with the great, the lord of chaos himself, @akung_cobain and witnessing the intense performance of @balebatpakidulan_ has been a blessing. Filming was made possible with the kindness and fantastic support of @lorenzodalri @teguhpermana555 @disasterhead @suryajow and @salmanuhaha by @riarrr

International premiere of my recent work Badak at this year’s @britishfilminstitute London Film Festival! The work stars by stellar casts @sasapins @narendrarendra @ujihahan and @gintaninaswastika A few people I’ve met have told me that this is apparently my version of a comedy. It was made last year and commissioned by the @thailand_biennale Phuket. New trailer on slide 2. It’s been brutally amputated because Instagram one minute policy, oh well. The behind-the-scenes photos and videos were taken by the master himself, @yud_hung

If you happen to be in London this October, do come along to the screening. 🦏🦏 by @riarrr

𝑬𝒙𝒉𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑭𝒐𝒄𝒖𝒔 | 𝑹𝒊𝒂𝒓 𝑹𝒊𝒛𝒂𝒍𝒅𝒊

Inside-Out Art Museum is currently presenting 𝑪𝒓𝒂𝒔𝒉, 𝑪𝒓𝒖𝒔𝒉. This edition features Indonesian artist Riar Rizaldi’s 𝑳𝒂𝒓𝒖𝒏𝒈. @riarrr

The title 𝑳𝒂𝒓𝒖𝒏𝒈 evokes both the act of setting something adrift and the ritual of sea burial. Through the perspective of fishermen and a subdued, recurring melody, the work traces the struggles of crew members stranded at sea and their longing for land.

The work continues Rizaldi’s long-standing engagement with workplace accidents, particularly with the experiences of workers whose labor sustains the circulation of logistics and production, yet remains largely absent from capitalist narratives of knowledge. It is precisely within these concrete conditions of work and survival that accidents repeatedly occur.

At the exhibition’s opening, Rizaldi joined us to share the trajectory of the work’s development. In contrast to the drifting landscapes depicted in the film, 𝑳𝒂𝒓𝒖𝒏𝒈 was deliberately filmed on an artificial studio set, with the costumes designed by the artist himself.

This edition also includes Rizaldi’s sketches, notes, and behind-the-scenes documentation, allowing the development of the work—from conception and experimentation to production—to unfold. by @riarrr

First time in Beijing, thanks to two exhibitions I’m part of, and to the incredibly generous invitation from curators @yifengweiart and @penny.dan.xu as their exhibition, Prayers to Fornax, is currently on view at Hyundai Motorstudio Beijing as the recipient of the Hyundai Blue Prize+ 2025, and includes my work Tellurian Drama. At the same time, I’m also showing Larung at @ioam_beijing in Crash, Crush, curated by @deepairline and @caoliyao_lea - had a screening and talk for total 4 hours(!!) in the museum (those who stay are true soldiers). Both shows are great, timely, critical, and immersive. Prayers to Fornax runs until 13 December, while Crash, Crush is on view until 11 October. Alas, it was far too short a trip. taken in Beijing, China by @riarrr

How do geology, spirituality, labor, and cinema become intertwined?

In this conversation, Riar Rizaldi reflects on the ideas behind Monisme—his feature-length film and the solo exhibition at Nonfrasa. Drawing from his time living near Mount Merapi, Rizaldi discusses the making of the film, its collaborative process, and his ongoing interest in the relationships between humans, nature, technology, and systems of belief.

Watch the full interview on Nonfrasa YouTube channel; the link is on our bio.

“In Monisme (2023), Riar Rizaldi’s feature-length docu-fiction, the road unfolds on the slopes of Mount Merapi—Indonesia’s most active volcano, the mountain of fire, the creator and destroyer. [...] What Darwinian progress describes as gradual improvement toward fitness is a story that makes sense at one scale of time and becomes unrecognizable at another. With the metric of deep geological or cosmic time, what persists is circular, like the roads traveled in Monisme. The post-human is not a future condition to be dreaded or celebrated. It is the already-existing proposal of the volcano, from which our current epoch constitutes a brief appearance.”

For Riar, Merapi’s eruptions are understood as epistemological events and murmurs of the eventuality of human extinction. “Extinction is the rule. Survival is the exception,” the film’s voiceover says. In the artist’s lexicon, the investigation into the post-human is quite literal, an entire world without humans following the big explosion that has been promised and predicted for hundreds of years. What is intoned in the film recalibrates what follows, asking us to understand the present moment not as a stable platform from which we observe the occasional catastrophe, but rather positions survival as an extremist improbability that is interpreted as a natural accident. This is Merapi’s world and we all just live in it.

Outtakes from the road movie that is three exhibitions (Monisme at @nonfrasa @ubudcinecurious 1-7; Period Piece at @museummacan @venuslauhk 8-14; KKK at @ruangmes56 15-17) in three cities (Ubud; Jakarta; Yogyakarta). And plucked to write about a friend’s work with, around, and erupting into Monisme 🌋 thank you @krisnasudharma for inviting me to write! by @riarrr
