The narcissist’s voice can keep running inside your head long after the relationship has ended.

This is called an introject, and it can keep you psychologically trapped inside the narcissistic shared fantasy.

That mental prison stays active until you consciously and deliberately dismantle these internal patterns.

This requires a very specific kind of psychological work.

Why do intelligent, empathetic people end up in relationships with narcissists?

I’ve identified 5 traits and psychological patterns that can make you especially vulnerable to narcissistic manipulation.

High empathy, childhood conditioning to fix other people’s problems, fear of conflict, confusing intensity with love, and a tendency toward hyperfocus can all play a role.

These patterns often develop early in life and influence how you connect with others, what you tolerate, and how deeply you become invested in unhealthy relationships.

Understanding these patterns is an important step toward breaking the cycle.

Which of these 5 patterns resonates most with your experience? Let me know in the comments. by @richard.grannon

Your brain can keep you trapped in a trauma bond by separating the good memories from the painful ones.

This psychological mechanism is called splitting.

You hold onto the loving moments, the kindness, and the person you believed the narcissist was. Meanwhile, the cruelty, manipulation, and painful experiences get pushed into a separate compartment.

This keeps the narcissistic shared fantasy alive and makes it incredibly difficult to see the relationship clearly.
The key to dissolving a trauma bond is integrating these memories so you can finally see the whole experience for what it was.

Do you agree that you can abandon sincere communication when communicating with the terminally insincere? by @richard.grannon

What happens when a psychopath meets a psychologist? 👀

For this very special round-table edition of The Hodge-Cast, I wanted to try something different.

I’m joined by Kanika Batra, a content creator who has publicly discussed being diagnosed as a high-functioning sociopath, alongside Richard Grannon, a psychology expert, author and online educator known for his work on narcissistic abuse, trauma and human behaviour.

My goal was simple: to get inside the mind of someone who identifies with psychopathic and sociopathic traits and ask the questions most people would never dare to ask.

But there was a twist.

Rather than simply hearing Kanika’s perspective, I wanted to bring in a psychology expert who could challenge, examine and unpack her answers from a psychological standpoint.

What followed was a nearly three-hour conversation that went everywhere from psychopathy, narcissism, manipulation and psychology to philosophy, conservative politics, religion and consciousness — all explored through the lens of someone diagnosed as a psychopath. 🤯

How much of what you think you know about psychopathy is actually true?

Try smiling and saying NO to someone today. Then pay attention to their reaction.

If someone responds with intense anger, guilt-tripping, or acts as though you’ve hurt them, you may be dealing with someone who struggles to accept you as a separate person with your own needs, values, and boundaries.

When you’ve been conditioned to believe that prioritizing yourself is selfish, even a simple NO can trigger guilt.

We set boundaries around the things we value. Your time, energy, and attention deserve that protection.

Try the Smiling NO Test and notice what happens, both in the other person and inside yourself. by @richard.grannon

One of the most revealing aspects of narcissistic abuse is how often the same patterns repeat across different relationships.

In Narcissist’s Playbook, experts explore why these behaviors can be so predictable and how recognizing the patterns can help survivors better understand what they have experienced.
