This afternoon at Soho House, I watched a fascinating 50-minute documentary (brilliantly produced by @mikekaufmanuk about Sophie Bramley, the woman behind the original European Yo! MTV Raps.
This was followed by a Q&A with her and more recent MTV presenter @beccadeadly Becca Dee

Having three generations of MTV presenters who spent 13 years each there was a moment!

What makes it particularly special is the incredible archive of Sophie’s photographs from 1970s and 1980s New York, documenting hip hop as it was growing and being born, and capturing many of its key players at the beginning of their journeys.

As a photographer, Sophie was there documenting hip hop when it was still emerging, capturing extraordinary images of a culture that mainstream media was only beginning to understand.

She went on to create and produce France’s first hip hop TV show, making 145 episodes and interviewing artists from N.W.A. to James Brown, before bringing that vision to MTV Europe in 1987 with Yo!

What struck me most was the question of who gets remembered when cultural history is written.

The European Yo! came first, before the American Yo! MTV Raps became the version that ultimately dominated the global narrative. Chuck D himself in the documentary also acknowledges Sophie as the first presenter to bring YO to MTV screens.

As someone who spent 13 years at MTV, starting as an MTV News Worldwide presenter and working my way through the ranks until I ran two of MTV’s music channels, I found her story particularly fascinating.

I know how ideas, talent and cultural moments can travel through a global organisation, and how easily the person who was there at the beginning can become less visible - erased- in the story afterwards.

Sophie’s contribution deserves to be properly documented and remembered.

It was a brilliant reminder that preserving cultural history isn’t just about saving the footage. It’s about remembering the people who created it, shaped it and were there when it was happening.

And that’s why conversations with organisations like the BFI about preserving the untold stories of those MTV years matter.

History belongs to the people who were there too. ❤️ taken in Soho House by @richardpascoe
