For Gucci SS27, SUB GLOBAL invited RAWORKSHOP to contribute objects to Prototype, a proposition for the house’s future retail spaces under Demna.

Included: Double Negative Vessel, KK Box, Slit Tissue Box, Gleba Urns.

Commissioned: Sconce 01, cast amber rubber.

A prototype for a store, furnished with objects that have already been around the block.

Very excited to share New Book 2. For our second issue of New Book we explored the theme of “integrity”. In times where trends and ideas spread in seconds, and also may only last seconds, the pressure to gain recognition is greater than ever; integrity has become one of the most valuable (but also most tested) qualities a creative can possess. @richaybar is a Dominican-American sculptor and furniture designer. After working at Hood by Air, he founded @r.a.workshop in 2019.

Known for his iconic use of rubber, Aybar’s work fuses subversive design language with wit and playfulness. His sculptural furniture transforms everyday objects into tactile, provocative forms that invite both curiosity and interaction.

SLUG CHAIR, 2024

Cast in solid urethane rubber.

Inspired by the low-slung aesthetics of automotive design and the enveloping comfort of high-performance gaming chairs, SLUG CHAIR embodies a striking duality: the high-velocity world of cars and oil colliding with the slow, organic slither of the primordial slug. Cast in rubber made from the by-products of petroleum refining, it transforms the residue of speed into an object of stillness.

Available in Amber, Molasses, and Serum.

DON PUNEE DAYBED
2023

Developed for a client’s studio, the Don Punee Daybed is constructed from hand-stained maple plywood upholstered in reclaimed military duffel bags and bisected by a single aluminum bar. Measuring 10 feet long and 5 feet deep, its generous proportions create a shared surface for gathering, reading, conversation, or rest, changing character as the light changes throughout the day. CLAMP
2019

An overhead reading lamp created in collaboration with Bader Alqatami (@mushighlik ).

Commissioned for a private residence in Kuwait.

Carved from polished Turkish Silver Travertine, CLAMP explores reading as a deliberate act of pause. Inspired by brutalist architecture, its cantilevered form clamps over the reader, casting an intimate pool of light below while concealed uplights wash the room above.

Fabricated in collaboration with the artisans of Roma International Factory and the workshops of Amghara Industrial, Kuwait.

The shapes and cast rubber handles draw from the vernacular forms of improvised prison weapons, including examples documented in Jack Luger’s Improvised Weapons in American Prisons.

Cutlery occupies a strange territory. It contains both the refined and the desperate. Beauty and survival.

A prison shank rarely begins as a weapon. It begins as whatever is available: a toothbrush, a comb, a melted plastic bag handle. Under extreme constraint, necessity transforms it into an object with its own logic. Function mutates form, and style emerges.

What interests me isn’t the violence but the ingenuity. The ruthless economy of these objects—the way necessity strips away everything except what is essential.

The handles are cast in the same translucent polyurethane rubber I use throughout my practice, a synthetic material whose own history is tied to extraction and industry. Here it becomes something that exists uneasily between domestic ritual and improvised survival. Their swollen, layered forms preserve the hand-built quality of improvised grips, where comfort, control, and whatever material is available become inseparable. by @richaybar

RAWORKSHOP designed cutlery developed over several years through a series of revisions.

The pieces were modeled in CAD and produced using metal binder jet printing.

Stainless steel powder is bonded layer by layer with a liquid binder, then fired in a furnace where the binder burns away and the steel fuses into a dense solid.

After printing, the pieces are machined, polished and finished by hand before receiving cast polyurethane rubber handles.

NIGHTBLOCKS — WALKS I–VIII
translucent polyurethane rubber and lighting components. Deposit, NY — March 2025

This series reflects on the emotional function of nightlights: objects used to negotiate darkness — often in childhood, here made obstructive and monumental.

Eight one-of-one nightlights, each cast individually around a functioning plug unit.

Each work is titled as a WALK — a low continuous light for moving through darkness.

The four proportions follow a halving logic; each size a compression of the last.

Cast by hand, one at a time. No two resolve the same way inside.

Light is not emitted from a point but held within mass. What reaches you has traveled through rubber — diffused, slowed, and altered in the process.
