Although I don’t do as many covers these days, every now and then I’ll sneak one in…,

And I happen to love the theme of PEACE as expressed by the Global Ukulele Flashmob for Peace and Unity. So when given the chance, I decided to take the plunge today with this post!

Imagine a world where there are no landmines, tanks are used as playground equipment, and war is word no longer in our vocabulary. I’ve often wondered if we learn aggression, hatred, bigotry, jealousy and a myriad of soul depleting thoughts from our role models… our parents, teachers, onscreen heroes… those people we worshiped as kids, handed down from generation to generation. BUT, what if one day that wasn’t the lesson we were taught?

Here is my interpretive rendition of the classic Ben E. King tune… Stand By Me.

I call this post… Tiptoeing Through the Landmines of Life.

It’s a fun piece played on the baritone ukulele. And, while I had no intentions of turning this into a “serious” write-up, euphemistically we refer to anti-personnel mines as “landmines.” In 2024, we hit a horrible milestone, a four-year high actually, of nearly 6,300 casualties from these devices and the vast majority (about 90%) were actually civilians… and roughly half were children! And sadly, landmines last for decades, posing a critical danger to both humans and wildlife.

So, while this piece is meant to be fun and lackadaisical, please keep in mind that there’s nothing humorous or lighthearted about the perils of landmines.

A couple of months ago, I posted a simple original tune called Goin’ Down Easy Street. It had droning tonal quality that was easy on the ears and seemed to resonate (pun intended 😊) with many of you… myself included.

I thought a sequel would be fun, so I came up with…

Floating lanterns in a river at night has become a popular ritual in many cultures, especially in Japan.

Symbolically, placing your worries, hopes, and prayers in a small paper boat with a lit candle to gently float along a river stream at night, is intended to bring peace and good fortune. Even if you’re not a “committed believer,” I suspect the act, itself, is very therapeutic. I’ve done this or similar rituals at different times in my life and have found them all to be very meditative and comforting.

I was reading in the local newspaper the other day…

about how some schools in Austin, Texas actually flunked the standardized tests used to “grade” the schools on their academic achievements. And, of course, that got me thinking about just how important education is to kids throughout the world today. Sure, sometimes it’s about the details — those specific subjects that create focal points in our lives like the geometry classes for our would-be engineers or perhaps the chemistry classes for our future chefs — but, for most of us, an education provides the basics means for critical thinking and communication of ideas… building blocks really.

So my theme for this post is education. I call it…

The Empowered.

Incidentally, I thought it’d be fun to mix the chords of an acoustic guitar with the lead of an acoustic electric cavaquinho (a Brazilian instrument similar to the ukulele but with metal strings and different tuning). Throw in a grand piano and a few other sounds, compliments of the Clavinova, and voilà.
