“We need art in order to remind us of our humanity....they [artists] allow us to feel what we do not yet know ” Prof Angela Davis during her conversation with @wowglobal a few months ago.

These words have been stuck in my mind since Professor Angela Davis said them. Have you noticed how during times of duress, struggle and oppression folks lean towards the arts to help affirm all the things we can share our collective joy in? Songs, dances, creating with our hands, problem solving, gardening...

I think back to the start of lockdown, the videos shared of folks singing together or playing classical music off their balconies, connecting not through touch but a shared love of art and creativity. It brought everyone so much hope right?

This visceral feeling to create resides in all of us and I think it’s something that connects us at a deeper level. It reminds me how important creativity in all its guises is. Just as with children, play/creativity (I guess I use them interchangeably here), is integral to their understanding of complex ideas, the same is true for adults and teens too.

During the virtual talk I attended last night, @kevinmorosky said “you realise that art is an option, photography is an option, making films is an option” and I was moved. You have to think, why do we think it’s not an option? So often we deny ourselves the things which were made for us. @_edemm also said that if “anger is the fuel, vulnerability is the language that connects us” and I think that that is what art allows, I think that is what artists unlock; vulnerability which connects us. Is it any wonder then, that the Tories don’t want us to have this in our classrooms?

Allowing myself to be creative has changed my life. I really feel like I could do a TED talk on the importance of art and creativity in schools/life, but whilst we wait for that to happen, you can watch the late Ken Robinson & others speak to it.

I don’t have a conclusion here, it’s a more a starting point for you to delve into what art and creativity allows you do to and how it shows up for you. It is in the unlearning that we realise that we all hold the capacity to create } Rida looks in a mirror, holding a black camera, wearing a beautiful floral pink/red Liberty print dress which is floor length, cotton. On the evening of Saturday 3rd October, tucked away among bookshelves, we settled shoulder to shoulder like the volumes beside us. Despite technical hiccups and delays, a bookshop transformed into a cinema transported us through time and place. From the Sahara to Sudan, both films offered portals to untold stories—visual poems in motion.

Hussein Shariffe described Suakin, the setting of his atmospheric film The Dislocation of Amber, as “a dimmed reflection in a cracked mirror; empty eyes with the stars in a different house.” While abstract, Shariffe’s work shares a dreamlike aesthetic with Jocelyne Saab’s Sahara Not For Sale. Both root otherworldly landscapes in truthful storytelling, whether through conceptual art or the voices of those who belong to the land.

Sahara Not For Sale relied solely on natural sounds and voices, letting stories speak for themselves. Dislocation of Amber, though incorporating drums and Abdel-Aziz Dawoud’s melodic voice, similarly uses natural elements like wind to evoke desolation.

Grateful to have shared these rare films in a quiet nook of Kings Heath with friends @screenb14. You may have noticed our Instagram page, Falasteen on Film, was unexpectedly removed by @meta. We believe it relates to our coverage of Palestinian cinema. Though we anticipated such risks—which is why we invested in our website—we’re working to restore the account.

In the meantime:
 • Demand @meta restore our account
 • Sign up for our newsletter via our website

We’ll continue sharing event updates through these channels. Also, check out @screenb14’s incredible Kino Kiln film programme and thanks to @theheathbookshop for hosting us once again.

In solidarity and with thanks,
Rida at FoF and ScreenB14

25 women gathered during the mystical blue hour, to celebrate the launch of @harvest.makers beautiful new fragrance, Gather After Light

Thank you Katie for inviting me to be part of what I can only describe as magic

Every little detail had been so thoughtfully considered. From the hay bales outside, creating a cosy space for guests to settle with a glass of fizz, to the enchanting sound of @ningningli playing live violin as everyone arrived

Inside the tablescape was earthy and intimate. Delicate dried florals arranged in little pots hand painted by Katie, alongside menus lovingly painted by myself and Rida to complement the colours and textures of the evening

Guests were taken on a sensory journey through music, film and art, including an evocative screening of Gather After Light by @solomonfprice with artwork by @moirafrith

And then the most precious moment of the evening, when Katie’s sister surprised her with a moving, heartfelt speech. A touching reminder of the love and people behind it all

It was such an honour to bring the food to this very special gathering

Much of the menu was inspired by the changing seasons, using vegetables grown by my mum on her local allotment. She’s worked with the land for decades and has the greenest fingers of anyone I know. It’s so special to be able to take produce that she’s lovingly grown and bring it to a table like this.

Chinese chive focaccia with whipped citrus butter, the last of the season’s tomatoes with creamy tahini butter bean hummus, and the star of the table, the kabocha squash. Sweet, rich and nutty, roasted and served with a fragrant coconut, lemongrass and lentil curry, brown butter cardamom and lemon rice, and a fresh citrus herb salad.

We finished with a little autumn comfort. Sticky toffee pudding, spiced poached pear and a warm toffee sauce

The pièce de résistance was the unveiling of Gather After Light itself.

A huge huge thank you to Katie and @lucielikes for bringing us all together, to @shelsees and @ridasulerij for helping everything flow seamlessly during service and to Rida for capturing the magic in this gorgeous film

Grateful grateful grateful 🙏🏽

This reel is just one of so many sweet, thoughtful, loving moments with my loved ones.

My birthday actually started on Friday with a techno rave with a few cuties and an epic glow in the dark tee from @blowwater.co !

Onto Saturday and I watched my eldest perform at school with her friends and all the epic youth, you betcha I cried at their bravery and talent!

Afterwards I sat in the sun for a while before heading out again to a @falasteenonfilm screening with @screenb14 , two phenomenal films : Sahara Not For Sale and The Dislocation of Amber.

I ended the night with a feast at @perro.bhx with gorgeous @msshilpashinde ! The oysters had me buzzing!

Onto Sunday (my actual birthday) which started with us bundling into the car and heading to my mama’s house for desi omelette, parathas and chai 😋 I got to see my nephew’s beaming cheeky smile which melted me 🫠

Somehow I had room for an epic Sunday roast at @kynd_hamptonmanor , which we enjoyed in the greenhouse all to ourselves (thank you @phung.phung.phung.phung ) ! It was perfect. The sun beaming in through tall pines, the chats, the laughs, cutest baby smiles, the food and I even got to choose a song on the jukebox (Minnie Ripperton Les Fleurs in case you’re wondering).

I ended the day with talking to a bestie until midnight after laughing and playing music a little too loud!

This post is for sure super self indulgent but I’m allowing myself this pocket of joy and I hope what reads as a super mega appreciation for my friends and famalam who made me feel so loved and special! And I do want to mark it because quite frankly, three of the six weeks of the summer hols were a bit of a nightmare and I want to root myself in the gratitude of the love that was shown to me and my fam, then and now.

Thank you for showing me unconditional love!!! The love received will fuel me to keep doing all the work I’ve been doing (even if meta has currently suspended nearly three years of work on FoF!). This is why we have a website, please sign up to the newsletter!

And as always, free Palestine , free all oppressed peoples everywhere!

We’re back with another @falasteenonfilm collaboration 🎬 this time presenting a selection of short films which explore the complexities of our relationship to the land from Palestine, Sudan and Kashmir to the UK itself 🌏

This shorts marathon is part of the wider programme of events for the Rooted Through Realms exhibition by @shaheen.kasmani ✨

When: Saturday 5th Sept, 6 – 9 pm ⏳

Where:📍The Edge, Cheapside, Deritend, B12 0QH

While we all need and desire access to homes, gardens, good food, clean air, and proximity to water, we’ve inherited and are constantly being consumed into systems that are extractive and exploitative, resulting in a severance from the land, which has emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual consequences. If everything is cosmologically connected, then this is also a reflection of the Oneness/oneness that we are being disconnected from. But where there is rupture, there can also be repair 💖

Films :

- The Park (Dancing on the Rubble of Empire) (Arwa Abuwara and Turab Shah, 2025 34’)

- The Flowers Stand Silently, Witnessing (Theo Paganopoulos, 2024, 17’)

- Don’t Be Long, Little bird (Reem Jubran, 2025, 24’)

CEX Cellar is back!

In today's episode (available in full on YouTube), we've got the absolute delight of being joined by the insanely lovely Rida Suleri-Johnson, who is the hands-on correspondent of Falasteen on Film (@falasteenonfilm), dedicated to highlighting the historic and ongoing Palestinian struggle through engaging in screenings and a diverse array of workshops.

We've worked with Rida a lot in the past year, and been all around Falasteen on Film's fantastic events, so it's a delight to get to showcase some of her takes in the cellar.

If you haven't been to a Falasteen on Film event yet, what the hell have you been up to! Get that sorted immediately with a trip to Pan-Pan tomorrow, 30th of July, for a screening of 'Cinema Fouad' (1993) in collaboration with the sonic collective Bedtime Stories (@bedtime_stories.club) Get a ticket through their links, and find the full CEX Cellar episode through ours! by @ridasulerij

Feeling the gentle shift of the Spring Equinox energy 💫

There’s something about this moment in the year that feels like a true beginning. Mother Earth stirring again with a sense of renewal moving quietly through everything.

Maybe it’s the longer days, the crisp blue skies, or the way the sun charges our internal battery. Or maybe it was this afternoon spent foraging wild garlic and magnolia buds in preparation for Friday’s lunch whilst enthusiastically sharing voice notes with new ideas and intentions ✨

Everywhere you look the world is waking up. Magnolia blossoms unfolding, bright yellow daffodils, delicate crocus pushing through the soil, hellebores nodding in the garden. Spring has announced itself

We can’t wait to share our table with you at our Spring Equinox celebration. The new season, the new energy, and the simple joy of coming together as the earth begins again 🌱✨

Thank you to our dear friend @ridasulerij for creating this gorgeous reel that captures the essence of renewal by @ridasulerij

It’s been just over a week since our last Coven for a little while and what a way to finish. When we began a year ago, our intention was simple: to bring people together around a table, share beautiful, seasonal family-style dishes, and build a sense of community. Looking back, we couldn’t be prouder of what’s grown from that idea.

Over the months, stories have been shared, friendships have blossomed, and for us personally, the spark of creativity has been joyfully rekindled after a few years devoted to raising little ones.

Our final chapter was a true celebration, joined by our friends @midlandpress who poured their exceptional wines alongside dishes like pickled squash with capers, black olives and burrata; Blu Di Capra goat gorgonzola with our own sweet pickled prunes; hearty bowls of sausage, fennel and white beans; and winter kale risotto with pangrattato. Dessert was a showstopper with @shelsees stunning tower of poached pear, crème pât and dark chocolate pavlova.

To everyone who’s dined with us, thank you, your presence has made these gatherings so special. We’re already dreaming of what comes next and plan to be back in the kitchen later in 2026.

As always, our heartfelt thanks goes out to @ridasulerij for always capturing the true spirit of Coven so beautifully and @the_hedge for taking our vision for the seasonal florals to the next level.

This isn’t goodbye, just see you soon. by @ridasulerij

Huge thanks to everyone who made the bake sale such a success! From the small businesses that donated prizes for the raffle, everyone who baked and made delicious food to everyone who showed up rain or shine to generously sell out the bake sale! 🧁🍰

It can be hard to know what to do in times of horror and such grief. But our community showed up and reminded us that the way we combat feeling stuck, is by moving together and taking action.

We raised an epic £2643!!

The money has been split between two charities working on the ground in Palestine :
• @riversofmercy_org
• @gaza.infant.nutrition.alliance
