On Oct. 17, 1989, the 6.9 magnitude Loma Prieta earthquake struck. Operator Douglas Burghardt stopped the bus when the bridge collapsed right in front of him, saving everyone on board.

Buses were dispatched across the Bay Area to help thousands of stranded riders. Buses turned into bus bridges covering BART stations. Many operators volunteered to work on their day off to help recovery efforts.

The AC Transit Board of Directors, by a majority vote, approved a new collective bargaining agreement covering more than 300 employees represented by AFSCME Local 3916.

"This agreement reflects our commitment to the people who make our Transit District work every day," said Board President Diane Shaw. "Even in a challenging fiscal environment, we are balancing responsible stewardship of public funds with the need to attract and retain the experienced professionals who serve our riders and East Bay communities."

The new agreement includes phased wage increases intended to help employees keep pace with rising living costs, including 3 percent increases in the current fiscal year, FY 2027-28, and FY 2028-29. The contract also includes an adjustment to on-call pay, helping ensure qualified employees are available to respond when unexpected situations arise.

Meet Kevin Sheridan, proud owner of a 1965 GM New Look "Fishbowl" bus originally operated by AC Transit!

Since acquiring the bus in 2016, Kevin spent seven years restoring it to its former glory, preserving a piece of East Bay transit history for enthusiasts and generations of riders who remember riding AC Transit.
