Smuk, smukkere, Malou ♥️
Two hours. One apartment. Natural light.
How do you capture the essence of this goddess — her strength, her depth… and her goofiness? 🫠

“It’s Cheyenne, like the Indians”, she said when I asked her name. “My mama wanted to call me something different, but my dad got his way”, she concluded in a heavy West Virginian accent pulling her feeder calf out of the pen to display me in all its glory. The calf was called Ice and was a mighty one – a magnificent golden creature, a pride of its owner.

The Putnam County Fair was in full swing. It was extremely hot day, and people had abandoned the rides, seeking shelter in the tent where the Appalachian Lads & Lassies were showing off their dance moves. I had wandered to the barn, where families sat by their cattle, enjoying a lazy Sunday afternoon since the 4H/FFA (Future Farmers of America) Beef and Dairy shows weren’t until the following week.

Behind the barn there was a grooming station. “I have tried to get his pasterns clean, but nothing has helped”, sighed one girl, frustrated, pointing out her goat’s “ankles”. “Try this, it works every time,” said her fellow competitor tossing her a bottle labeled “Cowboy Magic”. Another team was blow-drying a cow. The meticulous care they gave their livestock was inspiring. The passion was evident.

The next few hours I spent at the judging arena. Rabbits were assessed pretty swiftly but the egg categories – that was intense. Kids stood nervously beside their egg cartons, nearly passing out in the heat, while the accredited judge scrutinized each one. As if this wasn’t enough, the kids were also pulled aside individually to answer questions. Back straight, eye contact, clear communication – she wasn’t playing around.

Outside the barn, a teenage boy was casually strolling with his pig. His FFA t-shirt spoke of values, heritage, and a commitment to the land, summarizing it perfectly: “It’s all about legacy”. West Virginia is one of the poorest states in the U.S. with high levels of firearm deaths and overdose rates, but behind the scenes of the county fair, I witnessed the heart and soul of rural America. When I saw these kids with their animals, surrounded by their supportive, cheering families, I saw hope.

I had the most fun portrait shoot with Gus Guerrero - the warm soul with a contagious laugh behind Curious Neighbors, a vibrant platform shining a light on Nordic creativity through honest conversations and a curious ear. Check it out!

America begins its 250th birthday celebrations.

It feels like things may get even worse before they get better.

My child is half American, so where this country is going matters to me. I hope her American side can be something she feels connected to, not something that feels harder and harder to understand from where she grows up. Why guns can seem to matter more than children, why families can be torn apart by masked people with weapons, why healthcare and equal access to education are not treated as basic rights, why mothers are pushed back to work only weeks after giving birth, and why women are still not trusted with their own bodies.

I hope her generation gets a better America. by @riikkakingphotography

Grateful for my Finnish community in Copenhagen and for the privilege of watching our children grow into wonderful young people. Being trusted to capture their milestone portraits is such a great honour 🫶🏻

The wind catches the hem of her top, revealing a tattoo on the side of her stomach. ”What does that sign mean?” I ask, pointing.

”A woman,” she says with a grin that reaches her eyes. The answer surprises me, yet feels undeniably perfect for her today.

Later, bathed in a mosaic of sunlight and shadows, I ask what womanhood means to her. ”Strength,” she replies. ”I feel invincible after what this body has been through. It grew three children.” The heart-shaped memorial ring on her finger catches the light. I remember. Now and always.

Our friendship, spanning five years, has held moments of raw pain. Life lived to the fullest, as they say. ”The naivety has faded,” she concludes softly. Life can be brutal, a harsh reminder that anything can happen, and not just to someone else.

I watch her hop on her bike, a farewell etched in the air. It’s the end of an era, even if it just means no more cursing the overpriced Copenhagen coffee together. I’ll see her again one day. The strong woman who bends with the wind, but never breaks. Anna.
