One of the things I kept returning to while making @hollowedfilm is what we leave outside the frame matters as much as what we put inside it.

The image should give you enough to lean closer, but never enough to feel safe.

That’s usually where fear begins.

There are moments in life that don’t fully feel real even while you’re living them.

Making Hollowed @hollowedfilm was one of those moments.

For weeks, surrounded by the mountains of Italy, we lived inside this film together. Freezing mornings in the wilderness, endless days inside an ancient church and a centuries-old palace that slowly became part of the soul of the story itself.

Watching Michael Maggi, James Faulkner, Magda Apanowicz, Kellan Rhude, Alexandra Boulas and this incredible cast disappear into these characters every day was honestly surreal.

And behind every frame was a crew that gave absolutely everything they had. People pushing through exhaustion, cold, pressure, impossible schedules, and constant challenges with passion, resilience, and belief in what we were creating together.

And there were moments where I would stop in the middle of set, look around at the cameras moving through candlelit corridors, the actors standing in costume inside these ancient locations… and genuinely struggle to believe this was real.

A few months ago, someone told me making this film the way we envisioned it would have been objectively impossible.

Guess who was wrong.

This is my first feature film, and I could not be more grateful to every single person who believed in this vision and helped bring it to life.

A huge thank you to the people of Civita d’Antino for welcoming us and allowing us to turn such a beautiful and historic place into the world of Hollowed.

And finally, thank you to my wife for believing in me even during the moments where everything felt impossible.

I will never forget this experience.

Build until failing makes no sense.

I don’t mean hoping harder. I mean working at it so long, so obsessively, and surrounding yourself with people who believe in it, that at some point the dream stops being the unrealistic part.

You look at everything you’ve built and think: it would make no sense for this not to happen.

That’s where I’m trying to get to. 🖤

Some actors play a character. Others make you wonder how you ever imagined the character without them.

Michael Maggi and writer/director Riccardo Suriano first met before The Waking Call. Riccardo wrote Alex for Michael, and what began as their first film together became a friendship.

Michael was incredible as Alex. So when HOLLOWED came along, having him step into the role of Thomas just felt natural.

Thomas took him somewhere completely different.
Making this film asked a lot of Michael, physically and emotionally, and he gave everything to the character.

That’s one of the greatest things about filmmaking: finding people you trust, growing together, and years later realizing you’re telling a much bigger story side by side.

We started with Alex.

Now we can’t imagine anyone else as Thomas.

Five short films. One road to my first feature.

Before @hollowedfilm , there were these films.

Each one shaped my voice, sharpened my instincts, and brought me closer to the stories I want to tell. Together, they became the foundation for the filmmaker I am today.

As HOLLOWED moves through post production, I’ve been looking back at the work and the people who brought me here.

To everyone who believed in me from the first short, stepped onto a set, shared their talent, or kept watching, thank you for being part of this beautiful, impossible journey.

People think directing is about having all the answers.

It isn’t.

It’s about finding the right words to describe a feeling that doesn’t exist yet.

Standing in a ruined building, pointing at a ceiling, talking about memories, fear, breathing, silence.

These moments with @edoardocarbonara on Bound by Blood from a couple of years ago remind me why I love directing.

It’s never about controlling a performance.

It’s about building enough trust that someone else can see the world you’ve been carrying in your head… and then make it more honest than you ever imagined.

That’s my favorite part of filmmaking.

That’s directing.

Penny’s first live theater experience.

We didn’t know what to expect.

She laughed, she danced, she couldn’t take her eyes off the stage…

And before we even made it to the parking lot she asked,

“When can I go up there and sing?”

I think it’s safe to say… she’s hooked. ❤️🎭
