It has been a very busy few weeks in preparing our engines for the 2026 season. Many jobs are taken place in this period, like this today. 45407 gets a new smokebox ring plate. by @riley_andsonengineers

Some shots of 34007 ‘Wadebridge’ in our works.

Our painters have smartened up the engine’s frames, the copper piping for the locomotive’s lubrication has been meticulously placed together and polished to a shined finish by our engineers. Copper gaskets have been measured and ordered for the engine’s inside and outside cylinder end covers, and Wadebridge’s lubricators are ready to be fitted to the locomotive. by @riley_andsonengineers

On Sunday 26th, our team, along with West Coast Railways moved Locomotive No. 45407 and it’s stock back to Carnforth Steam town, as The Jacobite season has now come to an end.

The engine left shed shortly after 9am and arrived at Carnforth on time later that evening, with water stops at Crianlarich, Helensburgh and Lockerbie.

With The Jacobite culminating, we now start our winter season, with 44871 being prepared for southerly mainline duties, and 45407 to move to the Wensleydale Railway next week.

A big thank you to all our team and staff from West Coast Railways for another tough, but successful season. by @riley_andsonengineers

At Riley’s, attention to detail is paramount. We take the best of care of our engines to keep our operations running smoothly and safely.

One way of maintaining our engines on a rainy day, is draining the axle box’s of the locomotives bogie and driving wheels. Whilst raining, water can descend down the side of the boiler barrel and end up nestling within the oil space in the axle box. The oil is there to provide lubrication, it expands when heated and having water within means less space for the oil to expand freely. The axle box needs a combination of ventilation and cooling in the form of oil flow and airspace, and axle rotation to splash or carry oil into the bearing surfaces. Water will disrupt this.

In order to remove the water collected, we un tighten a bolt below the axle box of each wheel which releases it, as you can see in the video. Once we can see oil start to carry through, we retighten the bolt and refill each axle box thoroughly. by @riley_andsonengineers

35009 continues its progress under our ownership.

We have over 2,500 original, scanned original BR and Southern Railway drawings for Merchant Navy loco’s, the above are various compensating links for the engines’ driving wheels’ brake rigging. Categorising and producing components from these drawings is an unseen task when overhauling locos, and one that requires attention to detail and expertise.
